Abstract Complex-formation abilities of a series of N-methyl alkylaminomethane-1,1-diphosphonic acids (1–7) with a common tertiary nitrogen atom (CH3−N−R) bearing linear or branched alkyl, cycloheptyl or phenylalkyl R substituents towards zinc(II), magnesium(II) and calcium(II) in aqueous solution have been studied by means of pH-potentiometry, ESI-MS spectrometry, 1H NMR and 31P NMR methods. The obtained results indicate that in the all presented systems mononuclear protonated equimolar and bis complexes are formed. Amyloid β peptide (Aβ), the principal proteinaceous component of amyloid plaques in brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients, is derived by proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Proteolytic cleavage of APP by a putative α-secretase within the Aβ sequence precludes the formation of the amyloidogenic peptides and leads to the release of soluble APPsα into the medium. Pyrithione-based ruthenium complexes as inhibitors of aldo-keto reductase 1C enzymes and anticancer agents.

Four ruthenium complexes of clinically used zinc ionophore pyrithione and its oxygen analog 2-hydroxypyridine N-oxide were prepared and evaluated as inhibitors of enzymes of the aldo–keto reductase subfamily 1C (AKR1C). A kinetic study assisted with docking simulations showed a mixed type of inhibition consisting of a fast reversible and a slow irreversible step in the case of both organometallic compounds 1A and 1B. Both compounds also showed a remarkable selectivity towards AKR1C1 and AKR1C3 which are targets for breast cancer drug design. Bioaccessibility of calcium, iron and zinc from three legume samples

Legumes can be a source of mineral elements but also of antinutritional factors which can affect their absorption. An in vitro method including gastrointestinal digestion was used to estimate mineral bioavailability. Soluble (bioaccessible) and insoluble calcium, iron and zinc from white beans, chickpeas and lentils were determined after gastrointestinal digestion. The influence of the original sample weight on the soluble mineral fraction was also estimated. The results obtained show that white beans are the legumes with the highest bioaccessible calcium and iron contents. Kinetics of the intestinal uptake of zinc acexamate in normal and zinc-depleted rats.

Abstract The uptake of zinc as acexamic acid salt in the small intestine of the anaesthetized rat was shown to be a two-phase process in normal animals. The first phase is rapid mucosal binding which satisfies the Freundlich isotherm equation and which involves about 30 per cent of the initially perfused zinc. The second phase was characterized as an apparent absorption step which obeys Michaelis-Menten and first-order combined kinetics, with the following parameters: Vm = 6.51 mg h−1; Km = 2.96 mg; ka = 0.306 h−1. Crystallographic, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of pyridine adducts of magnesium(II) and zinc(II) porphine complexes

Abstract A new purification method of magnesium(II) and zinc(II) porphine complexes (MgP and ZnP, respectively) by crystallization of their respective pyridine adducts is described. Pure MgP and ZnP can be regenerated by removal of the coordinated pyridine ligands by heating at 200 °C under vacuum. X-ray crystallographic structures of the pyridine adducts are presented for the first time. NMR analyses of the adducts reveal the coordination of two pyridine molecules. Electrochemical as well as UV-vis absorption spectroscopy analyses in DMF of MgP·(Py)2, ZnP·(Py)2, MgP and ZnP indicate that pyridine adducts are totally dissociated.
