Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used for the treatment of acid-related diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). They are recommended by the American College of Gastroenterology for healing erosive esophagitis (EO) and as long-term treatment in patients with healed EO. The available PPIs differ somewhat in their pharmacokinetics and clinical properties, but whether these differences are of clinical relevance is a matter of debate. Abstract The antihistamine and anticholinergic properties of mequitazine have been investigated and compared with those of clemizole. Both mequitazine and clemizole antagonized the effect of histamine in guinea-pig ileum competitively, the pA2 values calculated by Schild plot were 9.95 ± 0.44 for mequitazine and 10.54 ± 0.44 for clemizole. Mequitazine at 10−7 M produced a parallel shift of the dose-response curve to acetylcholine in the rat duodenum, clemizole and the lower doses of mequitazine failed to modify the effect of acetylcholine. Background —Angiotensin II (Ang II) plays a critical role in the development of vascular lesions in hypertension, atherosclerosis, and several renal diseases. Because Ang II may contribute to the leukocyte recruitment associated with these pathological states, the aim of the present study was to assess the role of Ang II in leukocyte–endothelial cell interactions in vivo. SummaryObjective Management of Graves' disease (GD) in Europe was published in 1987. Aim of this survey was to provide an update on clinical practice in Europe, and to compare it with a 2011 American survey. Design Members of the European Thyroid Association (ETA) were asked to participate in a survey on management of GD, using the same questionnaire of a recent American survey. Results A total of 147 ETA members participated. ABSTRACT From January 1999 to February 2007, 61 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) candidates for kidney transplantation underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) to detect Helicobacter pylori (HP). We correlated treatment for HP before transplantation and upper digestive tract hemorrhagic complications and possible recurrence of peptic disease posttransplantation. What is known and objective Mebendazole (MBZ) is a broad-spectrum antihelminthic agent of the benzimidazole type. Although MBZ has been reported to cause hepatic injury, case reports of severe hepatic injury are very rare. We report a case of severe hepatitis after administration of MBZ in a patient with Gilbert's syndrome affected by pinworms infestation. Case summary Differently from other cases of hepatitis due to MBZ reported in the scientific literature, our patient received standard doses of MBZ for a short period of time.
