Prospective evaluation of parathyroid graft function after total parathyroidectomy and heterotopic autotransplantation in renal hyperparathyroidism b…

1998

The value of gradients for intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the assessment of graft function after total parathyroidectomy/autotransplantation for renal hyperparathyroidism was evaluated in a prospective follow-up study. Altogether 99 patients who underwent operation from August 1, 1987 to December 31, 1996 were prospectively investigated and reexamined postoperatively, including analyses of serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase, and intact PTH in the antecubital venous blood of both arms. The postoperative course is known for all patients. Of the 99 patients included in the study, 95 underwent one to nine reexaminations (median three) over follow-up periods of 1 month to 5 years (median 2…

A noninvasive postoperative clinical score to identify patients at risk for postoperative pulmonary complications: The air-test score

2020

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) negatively affect morbidity, healthcare costs and postsurgical survival. Preoperative and intraoperative peripheral oxyhemoglobin saturation (SpO2) levels are independent risk factors for postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). The air-test assesses the value of SpO2 while breathing room-air. We aimed at building a clinical score that includes the air-test for predicting the risk for PPCs. METHODS: This is a development and validation study in patients -randomly divided into two cohorts- from a large randomized clinical trial (iPROVE) that enrolled 964 intermediate-to-high risk patients scheduled for abdominal surgery. Arterial …

Abdominal wall incisional hernia repair improves respiratory function: results after 3 years of follow-up

2020

Abstract Purpose Hernias severely impact patient quality of life (QoL), and 80% of patients require a surgical operation. Moreover, hernias are responsible for respiratory function alterations. This study aims to investigate the postoperative alterations in respiratory function after open ventral hernia repair in patients with incisional hernia. Methods Patients operated on at the Policlinico “Paolo Giaccone” at Palermo University Hospital between January 2015 and December 2016 were identified in a prospective database. Fifty-one patients were enrolled in the study. The respiratory outcome measures used were forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio…

Postprandial triglyceridaemia is modulated by insulin resistance but not by grade of obesity in abdominal and morbid obese subjects

2020

Background Obesity is associated with high cardiovascular risk. Postprandial lipidaemia has been associated with cardiovascular disease risk. Our aim was to identify whether anthropometric parameters, insulin resistance (IR) and/or fasting plasma triglycerides may determine postprandial changes in lipoprotein concentrations in abdominal and morbid obese subjects. Methods We have studied 20 non-diabetic, normolipidaemic subjects with abdominal obesity, 20 morbid obese subjects and 20 healthy individuals, that have similar age and gender. In all of them a standardised oral fat load test (OFLT) with unsaturated fat was performed. Results During the OFLT, the postprandial triglycerides response…

Abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome in a southern European population.

2003

Background: Our objective was to investigate the relationship between abdominal obesity (AO), as measured by waist circumference (WC), insulin resistance (IR), and components of the metabolic syndrome (MS). Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 283 subjects (130 males and 153 females aged 25–65 years) from a primary care outpatient clinic in Valencia (Spain) over a period of 1 year. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, glucose, and insulin were measured by standard methods. IR was defined as HOMA-IR equal to or greater than 3.8. Results: The prevalence of IR was 39.6%. Subjects were divided into groups…

Histological findings of the internal inguinal ring in patients having indirect inguinal hernia

2009

BACKGROUND: Aiming to deepen the understanding of the factors involved in the genesis of groin hernia, this study is focused on identifying the histological changes within the muscle fibers of the internal inguinal ring in patients having indirect inguinal hernia. METHODS: In eight patients with primary or recurrent bilateral indirect inguinal hernia who underwent a Stoppa open posterior inguinal hernia repair, a tissue specimen from the edge of the internal inguinal ring was biopsied and histologically examined. RESULTS: In all of the tissue samples, remarkable degenerative changes such as fibrohyaline degeneration of the muscle fibers, vascular congestion, and phlogistic infiltration thro…

Anwendungsmglichkeiten der intraoperativen Sonographie

1983

Effects of long-term lifestyle and high-intensity interval training intervention on blood pressure reduction in patients with abdominal obesity

2013

Purpose: The aims of this study were: 1) to study the impact of a combined long-term lifestyle and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) intervention on blood pressure (BP) in patients with abdominal obesity; 2) To document BP reduction responses according to the European Society of Hypertension BP classification. Methods: 105 patients with abdominal obesity (age: 53±10 yrs; 32 men; waist circumference (WC): 112±13cm; systolic/diastolic (SBP/DBP): 133±13/82±8 mmHg; 11% diabetics, 11% smokers, 68% with antihypertensive therapy) were retrospectively analyzed before and after a combined long-term lifestyle and HIIT program twice a week. Anthropometric measurements, cardiometabolic risk facto…
