Non-seminomatous germ cell tumours of the testis (NSGCT) form a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Cell lines derived from NSGCT may provide useful data concerning the biology of neoplasic precursor germ cells, differentiation of tumour stem cells and the relationship between various tissue components of these tumours. Four NSGCT were studied, two mixed tumours composed of teratocarcinoma, yolk sac and trophoblastic elements, and two malignant teratomas with a massive neuroectodermal component, equivalent to primary neuroectodermal tumours (PNET) of the testis. Refined cytogenetic-risk categorization for overall and leukemia-free survival in primary myelofibrosis: a single center study of 433 patients.

We have previously identified sole +9, 13q- or 20q-, as 'favorable' and sole +8 or complex karyotype as 'unfavorable' cytogenetic abnormalities in primary myelofibrosis (PMF). In this study of 433 PMF patients, we describe additional sole abnormalities with favorable (chromosome 1 translocations/duplications) or unfavorable (-7/7q-) prognosis and also show that other sole or two abnormalities that do not include i(17q), -5/5q-, 12p-, inv(3) or 11q23 rearrangement are prognostically aligned with normal karyotype, which is prognostically favorable. Human eyes do not need monochromatic aberrations for dynamic accommodation

Purpose To determine if human accommodation uses the eye's own monochromatic aberrations to track dynamic accommodative stimuli. Methods Wavefront aberrations were measured while subjects monocularly viewed a monochromatic Maltese cross moving sinusoidally around 2D of accommodative demand with 1D amplitude at 0.2 Hz. BACKGROUND: An increased incidence of numerical chromosomal abnormalities has been reported in the ejaculated spermatozoa of infertile patients. However, there are few cytogenetic studies of testicular and epididymal spermatozoa, and their results are still controversial. Chromosome painting for cytogenetic monitoring of occupationally exposed and non-exposed groups of human individuals.

The suitability of a three-color fluorescence in situ suppression hybridization technique was examined for monitoring five different groups of individuals: 30 occupied in radiology, 26 occupied in nuclear medicine or radiation physics, 32 patients with breast cancer, 26 occupied with military waste disposal, all presumably exposed to low doses of radiation or chemical mutagens and a non-exposed control group (N=29). The International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS) and karyotype are useful tools for risk stratification in primary myelofibrosis (PMF). We examined the additional prognostic impact of red blood cell transfusion need among 254 consecutive patients (median age, 59 years). Sixty-two patients ( approximately 24%) required transfusions at diagnosis whereas 22 ( approximately 9%) became transfusion-dependent and 170 remained transfusion-independent during the first year postdiagnosis; after a median follow-up of 55 months, the respective median survivals were 35, 25, and 117 months (P < 0.01). Desmin-related myopathies

Desmin-related myopathies are marked by accumulation of desmin, which is often familial and associated with cardiomyopathy. When multifocal this excess is characterized by inclusions such as cytoplasmic or spheroid bodies, when disseminated the excess is called granulofilamentous material. Excess of desmin might represent an abnormal type of protein metabolism.

Risk estimation in localized unresectable single copy MYCN neuroblastoma by the status of chromosomes 1p and 11q

In localized neuroblastoma, the identification of patients requiring intensive treatment is still difficult. We retrospectively analyzed data of 280 single copy MYCN stage 2 and 3 neuroblastoma patients with gross residual tumor after initial surgery. The 3-year-event free survival of the total group was 83+/-2%, and 3-year-overall survival was 92+/-2%. Patients < or=1.5 years had a better outcome than older children. Deletions/imbalances of chromosome 1p were found in 9/90 patients and were associated with a higher event rate but not with a higher death rate. Impact of preimplantation genetic diagnosis on IVF outcome in implantation failure patients

Implantation failure (IF) is defined as three or more failed IVF attempts, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is being used in these patients to improve IVF outcome. PGD was performed in 49 implantation failure patients with a mean number of 4.2 +/- 1.6 previous IVF failures, and in nine fertile controls. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) on blastomeres from biopsied day 3 embryos was performed for chromosomes 13, 16, 18, 21, 22, X and Y. There was a significantly higher rate of chromosomal abnormalities (67.4%) compared with controls (36.3%).
