Time‐resolved absorption and luminescence following electron‐hole pair creation in ZnO
2008
We report transient absorption induced by electron-hole excitation in undoped ZnO. A laser pump/continuum probe method covers 2–300 ps, and an electron pulse with lamp transmission covers 8–300 ns. The broad absorption spectrum increases monotonically with wavelength from 900 to 1600 nm. Following a reasonable hypothesis that the free-carrier-like induced infrared absorption is proportional to the total number of free carriers, excitons, and shallow-trapped carriers in the sample, these data allow setting an upper limit on the quantum efficiency of a specified lifetime component of luminescence. For the undoped commercial ZnO studied in this report, the quantum efficiency of room temperatur…
Dopant Clusterization and Oxygen Coordination in Ta-Doped Bismuth Oxide: A Structural and Computational Insight into the Mechanism of Anion Conduction
2015
Bi2O3 in its fluorite-like form can be obtained either at 730-824 °C, showing the highest oxide-ion conduction known so far, or by doping. We present a comprehensive appraisal of the local atomic structure of Ta-doped Bi2O3 investigating by X-ray absorption spectroscopy the aggregation motifs of Ta5+ and the interaction between dopants and oxygen vacancies. Using periodic density functional theory simulations, we show that the connection of Ta4O18 aggregates is energetically favorable. We find that the local coordination of Bi3+ and its electronic structure, as seen from the calculated density of states (DOS), are invariably determined by the Bi 6s2 lone pair in both doped and undoped Bi2O3…
Evaluation of the coupled high-resolution atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) using in situ and MAX-DOAS NO2</sub&am…
2021
Abstract. We present high spatial resolution (up to 2.2×2.2 km2) simulations focussed over south-west Germany using the online coupled regional atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) (MESSy-fied ECHAM and COSMO models nested n times). Numerical simulation of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) surface volume mixing ratios (VMRs) are compared to in situ measurements from a network with 193 locations including background, traffic-adjacent and industrial stations to investigate the model's performance in simulating the spatial and temporal variability of short-lived chemical species. We show that the use of a high-resolution and up-to-date emission inventory is crucial for reproducing the spatial varia…
Ligand-Based Charge-Transfer Luminescence in Ionic Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Bearing a Pyrene-Functionalized Bipyridine Ligand: A Joint T…
2012
Two new heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(pyr(2)bpy)][PF(6)] ([1a][PF(6)]) and [Ir(dfppy)(2)(pyr(2)bpy)][PF(6)] ([2a][PF(6)]), where Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, Hdfppy = 2-(3,5-difluorophenyl)pyridine, and pyr(2)bpy = 5,5'-bis(pyren-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine, have been synthesized and fully characterized. The single-crystal structures of pyr(2)bpy and the complexes 4{[1a][PF(6)]}·2CH(2)Cl(2)·9H(2)O and [2a][PF(6)]·0.25CH(2)Cl(2)·H(2)O have been determined. The effect of the pyrene substituents on the electronic properties is investigated through a comprehensive photophysical and theoretical study on the two complexes in comparison to reference complexes without substituents on the an…
Photophysical Properties of Charged Cyclometalated Ir(III) Complexes: A Joint Theoretical and Experimental Study
2011
The photophysical properties of a series of charged biscyclometalated [Ir(ppy)(2)(N boolean AND N)](1+) complexes, where ppyH is 2-phenylpyridine and N boolean AND N is 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine (pbpy), and 6,6'-dipheny1-2,2'-bipyridine (dpbpy) for complexes 1, 2, and 3, respectively, have been investigated in detail. The photoluminescence performance in solution decreases from 1 to 3 upon attachment of phenyl groups to the ancillary ligand. The absorption spectra recorded over time suggest that complex 3 is less stable compared to complexes 1 and 2 likely due to a nucleophilic-assisted ancillary ligand-exchange reaction. To clarify this behavior, the temperature depen…
Tuning the semiconducting nature of bis(phthalocyaninato) holmium complexes via peripheral substituents
2012
The semiconducting properties of the heteroleptic and homoleptic bis(phthalocyaninato) holmium complexes bearing electron-withdrawing phenoxy substituents at the phthalocyanine periphery, namely Ho(Pc)[Pc(OPh)8] (1) and Ho[Pc(OPh)8]2 (2) [Pc = unsubstituted phthalocyaninate; Pc(OPh)8 = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octaphenoxyphthalocyaninate] have been investigated comparatively. Using a solution-based Quasi–Langmuir–Shafer (QLS) method, the thin solid films of the two compounds were fabricated. The structure and properties of the thin films were investigated by UV-vis absorption spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Experimental results indicated that H-type molecular…
Revealing the Electronic Structure and Optical Properties of CuFeO2 as a p-Type Oxide Semiconductor
2021
Delafossite CuFeO2 is a p-type oxide semiconductor with a band gap of ∼1.5 eV, which has attracted great interests for applications in solar energy harvesting and oxide electronics. However, there are still some discrepancies in the literature regarding its fundamental electronic structure and transport properties. In this paper, we use a synergistic combination of resonant photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy to directly study the electronic structure of well-defined CuFeO2 epitaxial thin films. Our detailed study reveals that CuFeO2 has an indirect and d-d forbidden band gap of 1.5 eV. The top of the valence band (VB) of CuFeO2 mainly consists of occupied Fe 3d sta…
Au25(SEt)18 a nearly naked thiolate-protected Au25 cluster Struct. analysis by single crystal X-ray crystallograp. and electron nuclear double res
2014
X-ray crystallography has been fundamental in discovering fine structural features of ultrasmall gold clusters capped by thiolated ligands. For still unknown structures, however, new tools capable of providing relevant structural information are sought. We prepared a 25-gold atom nanocluster protected by the smallest ligand ever used, ethanethiol. This cluster displays the electrochemistry, mass spectrometry, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy features of similar Au25 clusters protected by 18 thiolated ligands. The anionic and the neutral form of Au25(SEt)18 were fully characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy, which confirmed the monolayer's properties and the paramagnetism of neutr…
Study and dating of medieval ceramic tiles by analysis of enamels with atomic absorption spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and electron probe microana…
2002
Abstract This paper reports an analytical study of enamel on fragments of medieval tiles using atomic spectroscopy techniques — AAS, XRF and SEM/EDX. The samples came from a hermitage in the region of Valencia (Spain) and have different motifs, mainly floral ones in a wide variety of colors. A study of the soluble salts in the biscuits and mortar was carried out using AAS to determine their present capacity to produce efflorescence and the type of efflorescence. XRF was used to identify the oxides responsible for the different colors and the pigments used over large areas of the tiles (white and green). SEM/EDX was used to characterize the white and green and smaller areas of other colors. …
Oxygen K-shell spectroscopy of isolated progressively solvated peptide
2020
Gas-phase near-edge X-ray-absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) action spectroscopy around the oxygen K-edge and mass spectrometry were employed to probe isolated substance P (SP) molecular ions, both bare and progressively solvated with 4 and 11 water molecules. Detailed mass spectra of bare and hydrated precursors are presented for the resonant photon energy of 532 eV that corresponds to O1s --> pi(amide)* core excitation, triggering resonant Auger decay and fragmentation from the ionized radical molecular system. The fragmentation pattern of doubly protonated SP hydrated with 4 water molecules clearly shows a series of abundant doubly charged backbone fragments, as well as triply charged pr…
