Absorption band at 7.6 eV induced by γ-irradiation in silica glasses

Optical absorption of defects induced by γ-irradiation in both natural and synthetic silica is experimentally investigated in the vacuum-ultraviolet (UV) range. Our results show that γ-rays, in a dose range of 1000 Mrad, induce an absorption band centered at 7.6 eV, the so-called E band, whose growth kinetics is not related to γ-activated precursors but to defects of the glassy matrix directly induced via the breaking of Si–O bonds occurring under γ-irradiation. Moreover, we observe that γ-rays do not bleach the E band present in some silica samples before irradiation, so ruling out that the associated defects can be precursors of the paramagnetic E′ centers, also induced by γ-irradiation.

The electron beam induced short lived absorption in PLZT optical ceramics

Abstract The short lived absorption induced by a pulsed electron beam in the led–lanthanum–zirconate–titanate (PLZT) optical ceramics was studied. The measured absorption spectrum covers 1.1–2.9 eV energy range and consists of several strongly overlapping peaks. The rise of the absorption is delayed with respect to the excitation pulse, due to charge carrier migration before trapping at centers responsible for the absorption. The formation rate of absorption centers and decay rate of absorption depend on the photon energy. Photoluminescence at 1.9 eV in synthetic wet silica

We report the effects of γ-irradiation on the optical activity of wet synthetic silica samples. As a function of γ-dose, the growth of a composite structure in the 4–6 eV spectral region of the absorption spectrum is observed. This structure can be resolved into two main contributions centered at 5.8 and 4.8 eV, respectively. The first component is usually attributed to an optical transition of the E′ centers. The second one is able to excite an emission band centered at 1.9 eV. Solution processed thin films of an amphiphilic tris(phthalocyaninato) rare earth triple-decker complex, Eu(2)[Pc(15C5)(4)](2)[Pc(OC(10)H(21))(8)], have been prepared from three different methods: self-assembly (SA) annealed in solvent vapor, quasi-Langmuir-Shäfer (QLS) and drop casting methods. In particular, we successfully developed a simple QLS process for fabricating ordered multilayers with a good thickness control. Efficacy of preheated chelating agents on calcium ion removal from instrumented root canals

Background The heating of chelating agents such as EDTA increases dentin wettability by decreasing surface tension. However, the calcium ion release effect of preheated chelating agents in instrumented root canals has not yet been mentioned. X-ray absorption spectroscopic study of trivalent and tetravalent actinides in solution at varying pH values

Abstract We perform X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) investigations to monitor the stabilization of redox sensitive trivalent and tetravalent actinide ions in solution at acidic conditions in a pH range from 0 to 3 after treatment with holding reductants, hydroxylamine hydrochloride (NH2OHHCl) and Rongalite (sodium hydroxymethanesulfinate, CH3NaO3S). The Hot Bands of Methane between 5 and 10 μm

Experimental line intensities of 1727 transitions arising from nine hot bands in the pentad-dyad system of methane are fitted to first and second order using the effective dipole moment expansion in the polyad scheme. The observed bands are nu3 - nu2, nu3 - nu4, nu1 - nu2, nu1 - nu4, 2nu4 - nu4, nu2 + nu4 - nu2, nu2 + nu4 - nu4, 2nu2 - nu2, and 2nu2 - nu4, and the intensities are obtained from long-path spectra recorded with the Fourier transform spectrometer located at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Total Absorption Spectroscopy Study ofRb92Decay: A Major Contributor to Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum Shape

The antineutrino spectra measured in recent experiments at reactors are inconsistent with calculations based on the conversion of integral beta spectra recorded at the ILL reactor. (92)Rb makes the dominant contribution to the reactor antineutrino spectrum in the 5-8 MeV range but its decay properties are in question. We have studied (92)Rb decay with total absorption spectroscopy. Previously unobserved beta feeding was seen in the 4.5-5.5 region and the GS to GS feeding was found to be 87.5(25)%. The impact on the reactor antineutrino spectra calculated with the summation method is shown and discussed.

Carbon nanotubes thin filters for x-ray detectors in space

In this paper, we present the first results from an investigation performed on nanometric thin pellicles based on carbon nanotubes (CNT) of potential interest for manufacturing large area optical blocking filters to protect soft X-ray detectors in astrophysics space missions. Synthetic and natural chromium bearing spinels: an optical spectroscopy study

Four samples of synthetic chromium-bearing spinels of (Mg, Fe2+)(Cr, Fe3+)2O4 composition and four samples of natural spinels of predominantly (Mg, Fe2+)(Al, Cr)2O4 composition were studied at ambient conditions by means of optical absorption spectroscopy. Synthetic end-member MgCr2O4 spinel was also studied at pressures up to ca. 10 GPa. In both synthetic and natural samples, chromium is present predominantly as octahedral Cr3+ seen in the spectra as two broad intense absorption bands in the visible range caused by the electronic spin-allowed 4A2g → 4T2g and 4A2g → 4T1g transitions (U- and Y-band, respectively).
