Resonant Raman characterization of InAlGaN/GaN heterostructures

2006

InAlGaN/GaN heterostructures and thin films with In composition ranging from 0.03 to 0.1 are characterized by means of Raman scattering excited at various energies in the ultra violet range, tuning the laser excitation energy through the band gap of In x Al y Ga 1-x-y N. It is shown that the addition of In to the Al y Ga 1-y N alloy diminishes considerably the vibration energy of the A 1 (LO) phonon mode. The phonon line is asymmetric on the low energy side, and the asymmetry increases with In content, while the main peak shifts to lower energies. A shift of the phonon energy has also been observed when the excitation energy is close to the absorption edge of the In x Al y Ga 1-x-y N layer.…

Optical properties of wurtzite and rock-salt ZnO under pressure

2005

Abstract This paper reports on the pressure dependence of the optical absorption edge of ZnO in the wurtzite and rock-salt phase, up to 14 GPa. Both vapor-phase monocrystals and pulsed-laser-deposition thin films have been investigated. In both types of samples the wurtzite to rock-salt transition is observed at 9.7±0.2 GPa. The absorption tail of the fundamental gap, as measured in monocrystals, exhibits a pressure coefficient of 24.5±2 meV/GPa. The evolution under pressure of the full absorption edge of the wurtzite phase is studied with thin film samples, yielding a slightly lower pressure coefficient (23.0±0.5 meV/GPa for the A–B exciton). Rock-salt ZnO is shown to be an indirect semico…

Electronic and crystallographic structure, hard x-ray photoemission, and mechanical and transport properties of the half-metallic Heusler compound Co…

2011

This work reports on the electronic and crystalline structure and the mechanical, magnetic, and transport properties of the polycrystalline Heusler compound Co${}_{2}$MnGe. The crystalline structure was examined in detail by extended x-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy and anomalous x-ray diffraction. The compound exhibits a well-ordered $L{2}_{1}$ structure as is typical for Heusler compounds with 2:1:1 stoichiometry. The low-temperature magnetic moment agrees well with the Slater-Pauling rule and indicates a half-metallic ferromagnetic state of the compound, as is predicted by ab initiocalculations. Transport measurements and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were performed t…

Phonon contribution to the absorption of ultrasound in amorphous solids at moderately low temperatures

1998

Abstract Sound absorbtion in amorphous solids is considered to be due to the scattering of sound waves from the thermal phonons. It is shown that the dependence of the absorption coefficient on the temperature displays a maximum in the interval 10≲T≲100 K . The frequency dependence of the absorption coefficient is investigated. Numerical calculations for amorphous Mg and Zn illustrate the theoretical results.

Comparative study of illite clay and illite-based geopolymer products

2011

Quaternary (Q-clay) clayey deposits are one of the dominating parts of mineral raw materials of the sedimentary cover at present area of Latvia. These clays can be characterised by illite content up to 75-80 %. Two ways for use of illite clays were studied: conventional and geopolymers method. Purpose of the second mentioned method was showing the influence of alkali (KOH) on the transformation of Q-clay/illite structure. Obtained products were investigated by IR–spectroscopy, DTA and XRD, pore size distribution was determined as well. Some ceramic properties and compressive strength were determined and compared. IR-spectrum showed the effect of alkali on the transformation of Q-clay/illite…

A [Cr2Ni] coordination polymer: slow relaxation of magnetization in quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic chains

2018

The reaction of [Cr3IIIO(OAc)6(H2O)3]NO3·AcOH with 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde, 2-amino-isobutyric acid and NiCl2·6H2O in MeOH, under basic and solvothermal conditions, led to the formation of the quasi-1D coordination polymer {[CrIII2NiII(L)4(MeOH)2]}n (where L = the dianion of the Schiff base between 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde and 2-amino-isobutyric acid), which behaves as a ferromagnetic chain, displaying slow relaxation of magnetization.

Estimation of solar-induced vegetation fluorescence from space measurements

2007

[1] A characteristic spectral emission is observed in vegetation chlorophyll under excitation by solar radiation. This emission, known as solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, occurs in the red and near infra-red spectral regions. In this paper a new methodology for the estimation of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence from spaceborne and airborne sensors is presented. The fluorescence signal is included in an atmospheric radiative transfer scheme so that chlorophyll fluorescence and surface reflectance are retrieved consistently from the measured at-sensor radiance. This methodology is tested on images acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on board the ENVIron…

Direct temporal reconstruction of picosecond pulse by cross-correlation in semiconductor device

2012

Cross-correlation measurements using the two-photon absorption process in a semiconductor is experimentally demonstrated for two pulses of different wavelengths (shifted by ~200 nm) and durations (20 times ratio). These measurements were found to be highly repeatable and fully suitable for the determination of the temporal intensity profile of picosecond (ps) pulses.

Vacuum-ultraviolet absorption of amorphousSiO2: Intrinsic contribution and role of silanol groups

2008

We present a study on the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption properties of amorphous ${\text{SiO}}_{2}$ $(a{\text{-SiO}}_{2})$ with high concentrations of silanol groups (Si-OH). We found that the absorption spectra are made up of a couple of exponential profiles. The first, in the range from $\ensuremath{\sim}7.5$ to $\ensuremath{\sim}8.1\text{ }\text{eV}$, was attributed to Si-OH group absorption, while the second, in the range from $\ensuremath{\sim}8.1$ to $\ensuremath{\sim}8.25\text{ }\text{eV}$, was ascribed to the intrinsic absorption. The VUV absorption cross section of Si-OH groups in $a{\text{-SiO}}_{2}$ was determined as well. The intrinsic absorption was found to be affected by…

Structural disorder and silanol groups content in amorphousSiO2

2009

We present a study on the features of the Urbach edge in amorphous silicon dioxide $(a{\text{-SiO}}_{2})$. The effects of temperature on the absorption edge in the range from 4 to 300 K were studied in both materials having negligible (dry, $l{10}^{17}\text{ }{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$) and significant (wet, $g{10}^{19}\text{ }{\text{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$) silanol groups contents. Remarkable differences in the values and in the temperature dependence of the Urbach energy in the dry and wet samples were observed. These differences are interpreted as a consequence of a drastic reduction in the degree of disorder in wet materials, which turn out to be characterized by an electronic struc…
