MS-CASPT2 analysis of the UV thermochromism of octamethyltrisilane

We interpret the reversal of the direction of the thermochromic shift of the first absorption band of peralkylated oligosilanes as the silicon chain is extended, based on multistate complete active space second-order perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2) calculations for octamethyltrisilane, Si3Me8. The observed shift is attributed to the effect of b1 distortions from ground state equilibrium geometry on vertical excited state energies and intensities. Hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) is functionalised with mercaptopropyl groups by adopting two different procedures ; co-condensation and grafting. In both cases tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (3-MPTES) are used as the silicon and sulfur precursors, respectively. Fluorine laser-induced silicon hydride SiH groups in silica

Abstract Formation and destruction of silicon hydride (Si–H) groups in silica by F 2 laser irradiation and their vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) optical absorption was examined by infrared (IR) and VUV spectroscopy. Photoinduced creation of Si–H groups in H 2 -impregnated oxygen deficient silica is accompanied by a growth of infrared absorption band at 2250 cm −1 and by a strong increase of VUV transmission at 7.9 eV. Photolysis of Si–H groups by 7.9 eV photons in this glass was not detected when the irradiation was performed at temperature 80 K. However, a slight destruction of Si–H groups under 7.9 eV irradiation was observed at the room temperature. This finding gives a tentative estimate of VU…
Energy balance in single exposure multispectral sensors

International audience; Recent simulations of multispectral sensors are based on a simple Gaussian model, which includes filters transmittance and substrate absorption. In this paper we want to make the distinction between these two layers. We discuss the balance of energy by channel in multispectral solid state sensors and propose an updated simple Gaussian model to simulate multispectral sensors. Results are based on simulation of typical sensor configurations.
Switchable Bactericidal Effects from Novel Silica-Coated Silver Nanoparticles Mediated by Light Irradiation

Here we report on the triggering of antibacterial activity by a new type of silver nanoparticle coated with porous silica, Ag@silica, irradiated at their surface plasmon resonant frequency. The nanoparticles are able to bind readily to the surface of bacterial cells, although this does not affect bacterial growth since the silica shell largely attenuates the intrinsic toxicity of silver. However, upon simultaneous exposure to light corresponding to the absorption band of the nanoparticles, bacterial death is enhanced selectively on the irradiated zone. Bioadhesive monolayer film for the in vitro transdermal delivery of sumatriptan

The work presented here aims to develop a bioadhesive monolayer film containing sumatriptan as adjuvant for the treatment of headache pain in a severe migraine attack. Permeation experiments were performed from the films prepared and from the respective solution, to evaluate the relevant permeation parameters. The effect of the penetration enhancers Transcutol, 2-pyrrolidone, and polyethylene glycol 600 was evaluated. The results obtained show that Transcutol and 2-pyrrolidone decreased sumatriptan permeation from solution, whereas a modest increase was produced by polyethylene glycol 600. A study has been made of the effect of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) at several concentrations from 0.24 to 5% (w/w) on skin permeability. Seven model drugs were selected for this study on the basis of their lipophilicity as represented by their logP(oct) values (from -0.95 to 4.2). Skin pre-treatment with aqueous solutions of SLS does not increase the permeability coefficient of the most lipophilic compounds (logP(oct)> or =3). Practical formula for the evaluation of high-order multiphoton absorption in thin nonlinear media

We present an analytical formula for the fast and accurate evaluation of nonlinear absorption in materials exhibiting an admixture of different multiphoton processes. This approach is specifically addressed for its use in thin films when the slowly varying envelope approximation applies. The contribution of absorptions of distinct order is conveniently averaged in order to use well-known expressions for a single multiphoton process. In the latter case, therefore, our simple expression is reduced toward the exact solution.
