Communication: Electronic UV-Vis transient spectra of the ·OH reaction products of uracil, thymine, cytosine, and 5,6-dihydrouracil by using the comp…

2013

Addition of ∙OH radicals to pyrimidine nucleobases is a common reaction in DNA/RNA damage by reactive oxygen species. Among several experimental techniques, transient absorption spectroscopy has been during the last decades used to characterize such compounds. Discrepancies have however appeared in the assignment of the adduct or adducts responsible for the reported transient absorption UV-Vis spectra. In order to get an accurate assignment of the transient spectra and a unified description of the absorption properties of the ∙OH reaction products of pyrimidines, a systematic complete active space self-consistent field second-order perturbation (CASPT2//CASSCF) theory study has been carried…

Unified Parallel C++

2018

Abstract Although MPI is commonly used for parallel programming on distributed-memory systems, Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) approaches are gaining attention for programming modern multi-core CPU clusters. They feature a hybrid memory abstraction: distributed memory is viewed as a shared memory that is partitioned among nodes in order to simplify programming. In this chapter you will learn about Unified Parallel C++ (UPC++), a library-based extension of C++ that gathers the advantages of both PGAS and Object Oriented paradigms. The examples included in this chapter will help you to understand the main features of PGAS languages and how they can simplify the task of programming par…

The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano

2019

International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.

Intramolecular Interactions in the Triplet Excited States of Benzophenone–Thymine Dyads

2005

Time-resolved and product studies on the synthesized dyads 1 and 2 have provided evidence that the benzophenone-to-thymine orientation strongly influences intramolecular photophysical and photochemical processes. The prevailing reaction mechanism has been established as a Paterno-Büchi cycloaddition to give oxetanes 3-6; however, the ability of benzophenone to achieve a formal hydrogen abstraction from the methyl group of thymidine has also been evidenced by the formation of photoproducts 7 and 8. These processes have been observed only in the case of the cisoid dyad 1. Adiabatic photochemical cycloreversion of the oxetane ring is achieved upon direct photolysis to give the starting dyad 1 …

Vibrational Excitation Hindering an Ion-Molecule Reaction: The c−C3H2+−H2 Collision Complex

2020

Experiments within a cryogenic 22-pole ion trap have revealed an interesting reaction dynamic phenomenon, where rovibrational excitation of an ionic molecule slows down a reaction with a neutral partner. This is demonstrated for the low-temperature hydrogen abstraction reaction $\mathrm{c}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{C}}_{3}{{\mathrm{H}}_{2}}^{+}+{\mathrm{H}}_{2}$, where excitation of the ion into the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{7}$ antisymmetric C-H stretching mode decreased the reaction rate coefficient toward the products $\mathrm{c}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{C}}_{3}{{\mathrm{H}}_{3}}^{+}+\mathrm{H}$. Supported by high-level quantum-chemical calculations, this observation is explained by th…

Academics as Politicians and as Operators of Global Governance

2018

In this chapter, the author scrutinizes the links between politics and academe in global governance. He analyzes two cases, those of former president of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and philosopher Michel Foucault, that exemplify different types of political engagement. Social scientists play a key but concealed part in the steering of global governance. Under and beyond global institutions, they partake in the development of influential transnational professional groups. By producing practical knowledge for everyday or ‘banal’ global governance, social scientists shape the politically imaginable at more institutional levels. Yet others provide at a higher level of abstractio…

PRISMA: towards quality, aspect oriented and dynamic software architectures

2003

The development of software systems must be done using platforms that allow the description of quality, complex, distributed, dynamic and reusable architectural models. We present in this paper PRISMA, an architectural modelling approach based on aspects and components that uses a component definition language (components, connectors and systems) to define architectural types at a high abstraction level and a configuration language to design the architecture of software systems. The component definition language increases reuse allowing importation of COTS and reduces complexity by integrating two modern software development approaches: component-based software development and aspect-orient…

The cognitive therapy of evaluation: Therapeutic techniques-[2]

1991

Abstract The main aim of this paper is to introduce the techniques used in cognitive therapy of evaluation. The Cognitive therapy of evaluation is being developed from the theoretical background of general semantics theory and it is a therapy based on language as an instrument of cognitive processes, and on the role it plays, through word-facts identification, in the development and treatment of emotional problems. The main techniques developed (abstraction orders and the extensional devices) and other therapeutic issues are introduced and explained.
