The Concept of Culture in Media Studies: A Critical Review of Academic Literature

This study examines the way culture has been researched in media studies and suggests how critical intercultural communication could contribute to the field. A literature review was conducted and articles (N=114) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2003 and 2013 were collected. Results show that studies dealing with media and culture do not systematically define the concept of culture. Findings also indicate that culture is oftentimes taken for granted instead of being problematized and addressed as a source of struggle. Advantages of using a critical intercultural communication framework to examine culture are discussed.

A conceptual model of the Academic Library (AL) service quality is hypothesized in the present article, and then validated and analyzed by a novel evaluation approach. Specifically, the conceptual model integrates the fundamental attributes of the canonical AL service together with those more relevant of the new and widely considered AL Electronic Service (e-services). Stability in Parents' Causal Attributions for Their Children's Academic Performance: A Nine-Year Follow-up

This study investigated the interindividual stability and mean-level changes in parents’ causal attributions for their children’s academic performance across a 9-year period from the first year in primary school (Grade 1, age 7) to the end of lower secondary school (Grade 9, age 16). In all, 212 children participated in the study. The results showed that, after we controlled for the children’s level of academic performance, the parents made fairly similar causal attributions when their children were in the ninth grade as they did in the first grade. Ranking has arrived to be compulsory for all countries as a tool to compete in the global world. The ranking’s rules are settled by some couples of global rankers. When their practices are implemented into national environments, mainly in countries under transition, some perverted effects might appear. The paper focuses on effects on politic environments and their follow up on academic communities, students and parents, and civil society as an effect of mass media involvement. The theoretical issues are illustrated by the outcomes in Romania particularly as a consequence of the application of the Educational Law since January 2011.

The world is in crisis. The academic system, its core, too. It has to reorganise, to reform itself. Several steps were taken by developed countries but also the emerging ones or the new comers. In Romania, a new Education Low has settled a deep reform for universities. Observing the academic autonomy, each university has to find its new way according to the principles of the Education Low. Our case study refers on a middle seize university of regional vocation. The paper investigate the main factors to be considered on general context, national context and the university’s one in the process of reforming and restructuring the university.
