Fragmentation of exotic oxygen isotopes

2003

Abrasion-ablation models and the empirical EPAX parametrization of projectile fragmentation are described. Their cross section predictions are compared to recent data of the fragmentation of secondary beams of neutron-rich, unstable 19,20,21O isotopes at beam energies near 600 MeV/nucleon as well as data for stable 17,18O beams.

Positive Muons as Local Probes in Paramagnetic Rare Earth Systems

1982

In recent years a new research method has been developed in solid state physics which is based on the asymmetry of muon decay1. A positive muon at rest decays after a mean lifetime of 2.2 μsec into a positron and two neutrinos, the positron being emitted preferentially in the direction of the muon spin. Hence if spin polarized muons are implanted in a solid, the time evolution of the muon spin polarization can be determined by a measurement of the angular distribution of the positrons. In an external magnetic field transverse to the initial spin direction of the muon one can study the muon spin precession frequency, which is determined by the actual field at the muon, and τ2-relaxation effe…

Large recoil momenta in the D(e,e′p)n reaction

1998

Abstract The D(e,e′p)n reaction cross section has been measured for recoil momenta ranging from 17 MeV/c up to 950 MeV/c at momentum transfers between 600 MeV/c and 700 MeV/c. At recoil momenta above 400 MeV/c, the gross features of the cross section are only reproduced if virtual nucleon excitations are included in the calculations.

Odd couple decays

2006

The decay of proton-rich nuclei by the emission of a single proton has been known about for some time, and is well understood. The latest observation of two-proton emission, however, will provoke some head-scratching.

The Mainz microtron facility MAMI

1990

Abstract At the University of Mainz a novel electron accelerator with a maximum energy of 855 MeV and 100 % duty cycle is being built. Some characteristics of this machine and an outline of its experimental programme are presented.

In-beam electron spectrometer used in conjunction with a gas-filled recoil separator

2004

The conversion-electron spectrometer SACRED has been redesigned for use in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled recoil separator. The system allows in-beam recoil-decay-tagging (RDT) measurements of internal conversion electrons. The performance of the system using standard sources and in-beam is described.

IRiS—Exploring new frontiers in neutron-rich isotopes of the heaviest elements with a new Inelastic Reaction Isotope Separator

2011

Abstract A dedicated Inelastic Reaction Isotope Separator (IRiS) for multi-nucleon transfer products will be designed and installed at GSI. Research at IRiS will focus on the investigation of new neutron-rich isotopes of the heaviest elements, study of which will advance various research fields, such as nuclear chemistry, nuclear and atomic physics, as well as nuclear astrophysics. The scientific motivation for this project and the alternative design options for the separator and its main components are discussed.
