The effectiveness of a five-session workshop on the distress of international students in Finland – a pilot study

2023

The mental health of international students has become a concern, as they face high levels of psychological distress. We designed a five-week acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) workshop with two additional individual assessment meetings. The intervention aimed at helping international students attending a Finnish university to reduce their symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety, and enhance skills of psychological flexibility. The post-assessment was conducted seven weeks after the pre-measurement. Digital Innovation Environments (DIE) as an umbrella term for facilities such as FabLabs, Makerspaces and Innovation Laboratories are already well known in the private and academic sectors. We focus on exploring the business aspects of DIEs and their role in digital transformation and creation of new opportunities for companies to increase their knowledge transfer and innovation capabilities. This research is dedicated to factors influencing the usage behavior of company employees of a DIE. From seven guided interviews, a total of 27 influencing factors in seven topics were identified through successive in-depth analysis and criterion-guided interpretation. These factors show the complexity…

Acceptance test-driven development

2011

Acceptance Test-Driven Development (ATDD) is meant to bring customers, engineers, testers and software developers together and help them understand each other. ATDD is not an automatic testing technique but rather a precise requirement management and software development convention, which helps to avoid misunderstandings between stakeholders and leads to production of program code satisfying only the real requirements making it more simple and clear. Conclusions about benefits and common problems emerging during adoption of ATDD are based on results of a software project which took place while this work was being written. They also concur very well with other case studies. A large framework…

Generation Y Travelers’ Intentions to Book Airbnb Accommodation: An Abstract

2017

Sharing economy is affecting the global economy with increasing scale, as customers can exchange commodities in an organized way under the help of an enormous number of online platforms (Balck and Cracau 2015). In the context of holiday accommodation, Airbnb’ s growth has been stunning as now it has more available rooms than hotel giants like Marriott and Hilton (Weed 2015). In fact, research has highlighted Airbnb’s potential to disrupt the traditional accommodation sector (Guttentag 2013). Given the importance of Airbnb, it is crucial to examine which factors affect intentions to book an accommodation on Airbnb. This study proposes an integrative model based on the theory of reasoned acti…

The Dual Nature of Spreading Negative eWOM for Branded Offers: Emotional Reaction or Social Response? – A Structured Abstract

2017

The exchange of comments online about branded offers is defined in the literature as electronic word of mouth (eWOM). Most of the existing academic research on consumer behaviour focuses on positive emotions and behaviour about branded offers (Veloutsou and McAlonan 2012; Zarantonello et al. 2016). However, next to sharing positive comments, consumers are increasingly using online media to distribute unfavourable experiences and opinions about products and brands (Ullrich and Brunner 2015), and more research on the effects of the expression of negative comments online is needed. The negative electronic word of mouth (NeWOM) is defined in this study as negative statements made or distributed…

Effectiveness of a web-based acceptance and commitment therapy program for adolescent career preparation : A randomized controlled trial

2021

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) programs have rarely been used as tools for promoting adolescents' career preparation. This randomized controlled trial examined the possibility to promote the career preparation of Finnish ninth-grade adolescents (n = 249, 49% females) with a web-based five-week ACT-based online intervention program. Participants were randomly assigned to three conditions, of which two groups received an iACT including support via SMS (iACTface: iACT+two face-to-face sessions; only iACT: iACT with no face-to-face sessions) and the third (control) group received no treatment. The results showed that career-related insecurity decreased as a result of the intervention i…
