Analysis of lipids in pelagic fish of Sicilian Channel and use of fatty acids as bacterial contamination markers

Lipids provide the expendable form of energy in marine ecosystem, and have an important role for the reproductive biology of fish. Also, lipids are important nutrients, versatile markers for marine trophic studies, bacteria markers etc. Among the lipids, several essential fatty acids are determinants for ecosystem health as well as for their known nutritional properties and prevention capacity of chronic diseases. Furan fatty acids (F - acids) are other important lipid bioactive compounds; for these is hypothesized a crucial nutritional role that is synergistic to polyunsaturated fatty acids omega 3 (PUFA ω 3), also if their mechanism is not yet clear. Source of essential fatty acid is the …

Lipid and fatty acid biomarkers as proxies for environmental contamination in caged mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis

2015

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were transplanted from a reference site (Syracuse harbour) to an impacted site (Augusta Bay) from January to July 2013 to assess the biochemical response of caged mus- sels to high trace element and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination, using lipid and fatty acid (FA) biomarkers. Sediment and mussels were analysed to assess contaminant bioavailability in the study sites and bioaccumulation in mussel tissue. Trace elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) and PAHs were significantly higher in mussels from Augusta than in those from Syracuse, mirror- ing the different environmental contamination. The biological impact quotient (BIQs…

Organotin(IV) and simple fatty acids: preliminary assessments

2012

Our group has a long researching tradition in the field of organotin(IV) complexes, usually proposed and tested as potential anti-tumor drugs. The leitmotif has usually been the modulation of the intrinsic toxicity/cytotoxicity of the organometallic moiety and a modulation of the toxic effect by means of biologically related molecules (synthetic or natural). Such a modulation is usually achieved by two (often overlapping) routes: dampen the damaging effects of the metal core, and serving as a carrier for specific tissue districts. Since a too tight binding on the organotin moiety is not always desirable – a too much stable complex could be a non-active one – carboxylates have always played …

Keggin and Wells-Dawson supported heteropolyacids as heterogeneous (photo)catalysts for gas-solid 2-propanol dehydration

2016

Catalytic and photocatalytic tests for 2-propanol dehydration to propene were successfully carried out by using binary materials obtained by supporting a Keggin or Wells-Dawson heteropolyacids via impregnation method to commercial SiO2 or TiO2. (Photo)catalytic 2-propanol dehydration was studied in gas-solid regime by using a continuous (photo)reactor working at atmospheric pressure and 80 °C. Propene and diisopropyl ether were the main reaction products. For the continuous photo-assisted runs the reactor was also illuminated with UV light. The heteropolyacid species played a key role both for the catalytic and the photo-assisted catalytic reactions; indicating that the acidity of the clust…
