Synthesis of (E)- and (Z)-29-methylidyne-2,3-oxidosqualene derivatives as inhibitors of liver and yeast oxidosqualene cyclase

The synthesis of (E)- and (Z)-29-methylidyne-2,3-oxidosqualene derivatives is described starting from the C22 and C17 squalene aldehyde monobromohydrins. The conversion was achieved by means of a Wittig reaction, followed by desilylation of the terminal acetylene. For trisubstituted 1,3-enynes, preliminary alkylation with a suitable allyl bromide was performed. A new procedure for the synthesis of squalene aldehyde C27, C22 and C17 monobromohydrins is also described. Some of the new compounds behaved as inhibitors of pig liver and yeast oxidosqualene cyclase and were time-dependent inhibitors of the animal enzyme.

Insights into catanionic vesicles thermal transition by NMR spectroscopy

Oppositely charged ionic surfactants can self-assemble into hollow structures, called catanionic vesicles, where the anionic-cationic surfactant pair assumes a double-tailed zwitterionic attitude. In the present work, multilamellar- to-unilamellar thermal transition of a mixed aqueous system of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), with a slight excess of the anionic one, has been investigated by 1H, 2H, 14N NMR spectra and 23Na transverse relaxation measurements. Amino acid contents of infant foods.

The protein quality of three milk-cereal-based infant foods (paps) was evaluated by determining their amino acid contents and calculating the amino acid score. Proteins were subjected to acid hydrolysis, prior to which cysteine and methionine were oxidized with performic acid. Amino acids were determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection with a prior derivatization with 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate. Tryptophan was determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection after basic hydrolysis. Extraction of dansylated amino acids using the supported liquid membrane technique

Extraction using the supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique demands conditions where the extracted compounds can be made uncharged allowing them to pass through the membrane. For amino acids, being bifunctional, such conditions can not be obtained directly. One way to overcome this problem is to block one of the functionalities by derivatization, utilising the other group for the transport. The SLM extraction of dansylated amino acids was investigated and optimized. It was possible to obtain high extraction efficiencies (>90%) for most amino acids. Heat capacities, volumes and solubilities of pentanol in aqueous alkyltrimethylammonium bromides

Apparent molar heat capacities and volumes of pentanol, 0.05m in decyl-, tetradecyl- and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromides micellar solutions, were measured at 25°C. They were assumed to approach the standard infinite dilution values and rationalized by means of previously reported equations following which the distribution constant between the aqueous and the micellar phase, heat capacity, and volume of pentanol in both phases are simultaneously derived. p-Nitrophenolate: A Probe for Determining Acid Strength in Ionic Liquids

In order to obtain an acidity scale in room-temperature ionic liquid solutions, the protonation equilibrium of sodium p-nitrophenolate in [bm(2)im][NTf(2)] and in [bmpyrr][NTf(2)], at 298 K, has been studied by means of spectrophotometric titration. Carboxylic acids differing in both structure and in water solution strength have been used. Data collected indicate that in the analyzed ionic liquid solutions carboxylic acids are less dissociated than in water solution. Furthermore, by virtue of a mutual interaction, the studied equilibrium seems to be affected by both the nature of the ionic liquids and the carboxylic acids.

The ability of several anionic compounds, including carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and sodium deoxycholate (SDC) and other bile salts, to separate the C(10)-C(13) homologues and the corresponding 20 positional isomers of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) by capillary electrophoresis was studied. Up to 19 peaks and a shoulder were observed with a background electrolyte (BGE) containing 10 mM phosphate (pH 6.8), 30% acetonitrile and 40 mM SDS, and 18 peaks were obtained with a BGE containing 10 mM borate (pH 9), 40% ethanol and 40 mM palmitic acid (PA). Characterization of Biodiesel from Vegetable Oil Using Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography

Biodiesel from vegetable oils has been analyzed and its suitability for internal combustion engines has been assessed. The Standard biofuel’s characteristics have been investigated. Gas chromatography (GC) tests were carried out to characterize the fatty acid behavior. It was found that the mass percentage of saturated fatty acids did not change substantially with time, while unsaturated fatty acids increased with time for both B100 and B30. An increase in density for B100 and B30 with time was noted. Biodiesel density was within the standardization. The calorific values of biodiesel and its blend increased with time. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe, chronic affective disorder, associated with significant disability, morbidity and premature mortality. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play several important roles in brain development and functioning. Evidence from animal models of dietary omega-3 (n-3) PUFA deficiency suggest that these fatty acids are relevant to promote brain development and to regulate behavioral and neurochemical aspects related to mood disorders, such as stress responses, depression and aggression, as well as dopaminergic content and function. Different metabolic behavior of long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in human platelets.

Abstract Whereas numerous studies deal with the effects and metabolism of eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5( n −3)) in platelets, very few concern docosahexaenoic acid (22:6( n −3)), although both acids are consumed in equal amounts from most fish fat. The present paper reports the modulation of 22:6( n −3) oxygenation as well as that of endogenous arachidonic acid (20:4( n −6)) in 22:6( n −3)-rich platelets.
