Cluster dirhenium(III) cis-dicarboxylates with α-amino acids ligands as mighty selective G4s binders.

2021

The synthesis of four dirhenium(III) cis-dicarboxylates with the α-amino acids residues Asp (I), Glu (II), Phe (III) and Tyr (IV) is presented. The G-quadruplex stabilization potential was evaluated by fluorescence resonance energy transfer - melting analysis. All derivatives show specific binding to c-kit1 quadruplex, while II and IV have also strong stabilization activity to HTelo21 quadruplex. At the same time, the compounds do not show any stabilization activity for ds26 DNA, which suggests unique mechanisms of molecular DNA recognition for these complexes.

Tuning of biodegradation rate of PLLA scaffolds via blending with PLA

2009

Blends of Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) with Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) in different proportions (95/5, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30 and 60/40) were utilized in order to realize biodegradable and biocompatible scaffolds for soft tissue engineering applications. The scaffolds were produced via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) starting from ternary systems where dioxane was the solvent and water the non-solvent. Morphology was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (average pore size and interconnection). Foams’ apparent density was also evaluated (porosity ranges from 87% to 92%). Moreover an in vitro biodegradation test of scaffolds was set-up in order to verify the rate of degradation of the va…

N-Methyldehydroamino acids promote a configuration cis of N-methylamide bond

2008

Abstract Dehydroamino acids with a methylated N-terminal tertiary amide bond occur in natural small cyclic peptide toxins. To investigate their conformational preferences a systematic theoretical analysis was performed on N ′-methylamides of N -acetyl- N -methyldehydroamino acids (Ac-Δ(Me)Xaa-NHMe, where Xaa = ( Z )-Abu, ( E )-Abu, Val, ( Z )-Phe, and ( E )-Phe) considering the configuration trans and cis of the tertiary amide bond. The ϕ , ψ potential energy surfaces were calculated at the B3LYP/6-31+G ∗∗ //HF/3-21G level with inclusion of the solvent (water) effect (SCRF method). The conformers localised were fully optimised at the B3LYP/6-31+G ∗∗ in vacuo. The accessible areas of the pot…

Morphology control in biphasic hybrid systems of semiconducting materials.

2015

Simple blends of inorganic nanocrystals and organic (semiconducting) polymers usually lead to macroscopic segregation. Thus, such blends typically exhibit inferior properties than expected. To overcome the problem of segregation, polymer coated nanocrystals (nanocomposites) have been developed. Such nanocomposites are highly miscible within the polymer matrix. In this Review, a summary of synthetic approaches to achieve stable nanocomposites in a semiconducting polymer matrix is presented. Furthermore, a theoretical background as well as an overview concerning morphology control of inorganic NCs in polymer matrices are provided. In addition, the morphologic behavior of highly anisotropic na…

On the structure of passifloricin A: asymmetric synthesis of the delta-lactones of (2Z,5S,7R,9S,11S)- and (2Z,5R,7R,9S,11S)tetrahydroxyhexacos-2-enoi…

2003

Stereoselective syntheses of the delta-lactone of (2Z,5S,7R,9S,11S)-tetrahydroxyhexacos-2-enoic acid, the structure reported for passifloricin A, and of its (5R)-epimer are described. The creation of all stereogenic centers relied upon Brown's asymmetric allylation methodology. The lactone ring was created via ring-closing metathesis. The NMR data of both synthetic products, however, were different from those of the natural product. The published structure of passifloricin A is thus erroneous and will require further synthetic work to be unambiguously assigned. [structure: see text]

The role of Zn2+ in enhancing the rate and stereoselectivity of the aldol reactions catalyzed by the simple prolinamide model

2011

Abstract The aldol reaction between acetone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde catalyzed by single l -prolinamide and its zinc complexes has been studied. An increase in the rate and the stereoselectivity of the reaction has been shown by using zinc derivatives. A mechanistic proposal, based on NMR and ESI studies, has been put forward to explain the experimental data: zinc–prolinamide complexes catalyze the reaction following the general mechanism of stereoselective enamine nucleophilic addition to the acceptor aldehyde. Zn2+ prevents the nonspecific base-catalyzed reaction by diminishing the basicity of the amine nitrogen of prolinamide.

REGULATION OF CATIONIC AMINO ACID TRANSPORT: The Story of the CAT-1 Transporter

2004

▪ Abstract  The discovery of the function of the receptor for the ecotropic retrovirus as a membrane transporter for the essential amino acids lysine and arginine was a landmark finding in the field of molecular nutrition. This finding indicated that cationic amino acid transporters (CATs) act pathologically as viral receptors. The importance of this transporter was further supported by knockout mice that were not viable after birth. CAT-1 was the first amino acid transporter to be cloned; several other CATs were later characterized biochemically and molecularly. These transporters mediate the bidirectional transport of cationic amino acids, thus supporting important metabolic functions, s…

Green extraction approach for the recovery of polyphenols from Croatian olive leaves (Olea europea)

2017

Abstract Pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) is shown as an innovative green technology for the effective extraction of the various phytochemicals from food by-products, therefore the aims of this study were to evaluate the application of PLE to engineer green extracts of Croatian olive leaves ( Olea europaea , cv. Oblica) for potential industrial production (functional foods/pharmaceuticals). PLE was conducted under various cycle numbers (1, 2), temperature (60, 80, 100 °C) and static times (5, 10, 15 min). Obtained extracts were characterized in terms of: (i) total polyphenols (TP); (ii) total flavonoids (TF); hydroxycinnamic acids (HCA); and (iv) flavonols (FLA). Response surface methodo…
