Xeroderma Pigmentosum – A case report with oral implications

2012

Xeroderma Pigmentosum is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by defective DNA repair leading to clinical and cellular hypersensitivity to ultraviolet radiation and carcinogenic agents. Important clinical features are: intense cutaneous photosensitivity, xerosis, poikiloderma, actinic keratosis, acute burning under minimal sun exposure, erythemas, hyperpigmented lentiginous macules, and malignant lesions in sun-exposed areas, including basocellular carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. There is a great involvement of many parts of the body, especially head and neck. The oral manifestations are mainly related to the occurrence of malignant tumors in the lips,…

Prognostic and clinicopathological significance of tumor-stroma ratio in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma:a systematic review

2021

Analysis of the tumor microenvironment has been proposed as a strategy for the treatment and prognosis of different neoplastic processes. A grading system based on the tumor-stroma ratio (TSR), which evaluates the proportion of stroma in relation to neoplastic parenchyma at the invasion front, has shown a strong prognostic value in different neoplastic processes. The aim of the present systematic review was to understand the role of the TSR in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), evaluating its correlation with clinical and prognostic parameters. An electronic search was performed in PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Collaboration Lib…

Evaluation of effect of a vitamin-based barrier cream on the clinical severity of actinic cheilitis : a preliminary study

2020

Background Actinic Cheilitis (AC) is a pathological condition of the labial mucosa considered potentially malignant. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of treatment of AC with daily use of a vitamin-based barrier cream. Material and methods For this clinical study, 36 participants with lower-lip AC were recruited from three oral medicine services. At baseline, participants were evaluated by clinical examination and clinical severity of AC was classified as grade I to IV. All participants were dispensed a tube of a barrier cream containing vitamins A, D, E and ZnO to apply once nightly for 90 consecutive days. Monthly follow-up was performed to reclassify AC clinial severity…

Can the lesions induced with actinic keratosis become an enigma for dermatologists? Results of an open perspective study

2017

Different face skin diseases (basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, rosacea, solar elastosis, etc.) could clinically manifest itself as erythematic patches, pimples or plagues. It is very hard to make the clinical exclusion in some cases of these diseases since their characters can partially overlap or certain lesion can mimic another one especially in the cases of skin areas affected with sun. Therefore, the histopathological analysis remains the “golden standard” of the dermatological diagnosis at skin diseases. Our study has shown that certified dermatologists detect actinic keratosis (AK) of face/head skin of I/II levels very well. Verdicts of dermatologists and pathomorfologists are…
