Unravelling the rationalities of childhood cycling promotion
2022
Decrease of children’s independent mobility (CIM) has worried academics, policymakers, educators and other professionals for decades. Research and policy often emphasise that promoting children’s physically active and independent transport modes as cycling is important to achieve better public health, solve environmental challenges and increase related economic benefits. Yet, cycling promotion is not a neutral process and all promotion efforts are derived from latent notions of ‘cyclists’ and ‘cycling’. This paper discusses different rationalities of childhood cycling promotion and the representations of ‘children’ as independent ‘cyclists’ they entail. We argue that in order to efficiently…

Wii-bändi : designing an expressive digital musical interface for therapeutic use with disabled people in a group setting
2011
This thesis presents the developmental prototype of a gesturally controlled digital musical interface. It is called Wii-bändi, as it uses Nintendo Wii controllers to translate the gestures into music, and is constructed specifically for clients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities so that they can use it in a therapeutic group context. It is argued that gestural and emotional expressivity might be based on a theory of vitality affects, and that optimal learnability could be achieved through making use of learning schemas. It then sets out how the interface was created using a methodological approach based on action research, describing the specific contexts that led to the cha…
Technical issues in beginning violin: an exploratory study in the classroom with 4-5 years old preschoolers
2018
Enchancing coaches' professional development through a goal setting program : an action research cross-case study

Erkina Elena, Kiens Kristel, 2013. Enhancing Coaches’ Professional Development Through a Goal Setting Program: An Action Research Cross-Case Study. Master’s Thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences, University of Jyväskylä. 115 p. Lack of knowledge and practical training are some of the main barriers for coaches not to use mental training in their everyday practice. Educational programs for coaches should include relevant topics and hands-on experiences to increase motivation in further education. Goal setting as a mental training technique is associated with positive outcomes, e.g., enhanced performance and mood, increased team cohesion and self- confidence. Th…
Planning, implementation and evaluation of a team-building programme in a female youth football team : an action research case study
2015
Antunes, Nuno, 2015. Planning, Implementation and Evaluation of a Team-Building Programme in a Female Youth Football Team: an Action Research Case Study. Master's Thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences, University of Jyväskylä. 55 pp It is believed that teams who work well together perform better. Frequently this requires an outside influence, which has been called team-building (TB). TB is a multivariate process and, therefore, should be studied as a multivariate issue. The current study focuses on understanding and describing the use of TB methods rather than directly investigating the effectiveness of the programme. Thus, the purpose was to describe the pla…
Ecosystem Under Construction: An Action Research Study on Entrepreneurship in a Business Ecosystem
2012
In recent years, we have seen increasing interest in new service concepts that take advantage of the capabilities of business ecosystems instead of single companies. In this article, we describe how a business ecosystem begins to develop around a service business idea proposed by an entrepreneur. We aim to recognize the different domains of players that are or should be involved in the ecosystem while it is under construction. The article concludes with an ecosystem model consisting of six sub-ecosystems having different change drivers and clockspeeds. All great things are based on a series of small things, and all the small things need hard work.
