Engineered surface waves in hyperbolic metamaterials

2013

We analyzed surface-wave propagation that takes place at the boundary between a semi-infinite dielectric and a multilayered metamaterial, the latter with indefinite permittivity and cut normally to the layers. Known hyperbolization of the dispersion curve is discussed within distinct spectral regimes, including the role of the surrounding material. Hybridization of surface waves enable tighter confinement near the interface in comparison with pure-TM surface-plasmon polaritons. We demonstrate that the effective-medium approach deviates severely in practical implementations. By using the finite-element method, we predict the existence of long-range oblique surface waves. This research was fu…

Simulating and assessing prospective scenarios

2008

The first part of the paper is centered on the phenomena of urban growth, in order to set the rules for a sustainable scenario of urban development. Then we enter the core of the paper that is the comparison of models. For each of the three compared models, we describe its main theoretical characteristics, the chosen parameters, and the obtained results. In section 6, heterogeneity of the produced results is discussed, and we highlight the points of interest and the lacks of the three models. Here we show that results we obtained feed debates about urban growth management. Finally, concluding remarks at the end of the paper address the general topic of the evaluation of the quality of simul…

MUV: A Game to Encourage Sustainable Mobility Habits

2019

This working paper investigates the question of changing people mobility towards more sustainable habits involving them in an engaging gameplay. The work is performed within MUV H2020 research and innovation action. The game design, definition and features have been co-created through the involvement of different citizens and stakeholders in six European neighbourhoods. The paper discusses the game design as resulting from co-creation and co-design experiences with each neighbourhood communities involved in initial phases. The paper argues that the local co-design activities have influenced the game definition, together with the community engagement approach. The MUV gameplay approach resul…

Dog-Owner Relationship, Owner Interpretations and Dog Personality Are Connected with the Emotional Reactivity of Dogs

2022

Simple Summary The relationship between owner and the dog affects the dog's attachment behaviors and stress coping. In turn, the quality of the relationship may affect owner's interpretations about their dog's behavior. Here, we assessed dogs' emotional responses from heart rate variability and behavioral changes during five different situations. Dog owners evaluated the emotion (valence and arousal) of their dog after each situation. We found that both negative and positive incidents provoked signs of emotional arousal in dogs. Owners detected the dog's arousal especially during fear- and stress-evoking situations. The dog-owner relationship did not affect owners' interpretation of dogs' e…

Molecular analysis of lichen-associated bacterial communities.

2006

The bacterial communities associated with 11 different lichen samples (belonging to eight different species) from different habitats were investigated. The culturable aerobic-heterotrophic fraction of the bacterial communities was isolated from nine lichen samples on protein-rich and sugar-rich/N-free media. Thirty-four bacterial isolates were purified and pooled into groups (phylotypes) by analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer polymorphism. Twenty five phylotypes were identified, each comprising between one and three isolates. One isolate of each phylotype was partially sequenced and the resulting 16S rRNA gene sequences were compared in a phylogenetic analysis. Three gener…

Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis on nitrogen dynamics in Mediterranean agro-ecosystems

2010

Excitation Energy-Transfer in the LH2 Antenna of Photosynthetic Purple Bacteria via Excitonic B800 and B850 States

2000

A newly developed CIEM method that uses a combination of semi-empirical or ab-initio configuration interaction methods and exciton theory to predict electronic energies, eigenstates, absorption and CD spectra of aggregated chromophoric systems with environmental interactions included is extended and used for estimation of excitation energy transfer rates. Excitonic energy levels of the two ring systems the B800 and the B850 of the light harvesting antenna LH2 of Rhodopseudomonas acidophila and the corresponding absorption spectrum were calculated by assuming inter-ring interactions to be zero. Excitation energy transfer rates were calculated by using the Fermi Golden rule with the dipole - …

The Radon-Wigner Transform and Its Application to First-order Optical Systems

2009

The Radon-Wigner transform is presented as a tool for the description of 1st-order optical systems. The input/output relationships for this phase-space representation are obtained and their application in analysis and design tasks is pointed out.
