Jacobi Fields, Conjugate Points
2001
Let us go back to the action principle as realized by Jacobi, i.e., time is eliminated, so we are dealing with the space trajectory of a particle. In particular, we want to investigate the conditions under which a path is a minimum of the action and those under which it is merely an extremum. For illustrative purposes we consider a particle in two-dimensional real space.
Beyond the spin model: exchange coupling in molecular magnets with unquenched orbital angular momenta.
2011
In this critical review we review the problem of exchange interactions in polynuclear metal complexes involving orbitally degenerate metal ions. The key feature of these systems is that, in general, they carry an unquenched orbital angular momentum that manifests itself in all their magnetic properties. Thus, interest in degenerate systems involves fundamental problems related to basic models in magnetism. In particular, the conventional Heisenberg-Dirac-Van Vleck model becomes inapplicable even as an approximation. In the first part we attempt to answer two key questions, namely which theoretical tools are to be used in the case of degeneracy, and how these tools can be employed. We demons…
Representation of Stationary Multivariate Gaussian Processes Fractional Differential Approach
2011
In this paper, the fractional spectral moments method (H-FSM) is used to generate stationary Gaussian multivariate processes with assigned power spectral density matrix. To this aim, firstly the N-variate process is expressed as sum of N fully coherent normal random vectors, and then, the representation in terms of HFSM is used.
Introduction: The Pedagogical Obstacle of the Phenomenal Forms
2016
This book is a further development from a previous one, published only in Spanish, whose title can be translated as The Copernican turn and the social sciences (Villacanas de Castro, 2013). It was a philosophical work relating to a general epistemological problem lying at the heart of the social and natural sciences. On the other hand, the present volume is firmly rooted in pedagogy. This difference reflects the professional journey that I have made in the meantime, from being a Graduate Student at a Faculty of Philosophy to becoming a member of staff at a Faculty of Education, where I currently lecture and carry out research. Despite the various shifts brought about by this transition, an …
Second harmonic ac polarography of strongly adsorbed electroactive species
1981
Abstract The second harmonic ac current is calculated for the case of a quasi-reversible surface redox system: both species are strongly adsorbed according to a Langmuir isotherm and the kinetics of the process are controlled by the electron transfer. The current is measured with a phase-sensitive detector and the variation of the in-phase and quadrature components vs. the frequency leads to the surface rate constant ks. The experimental results obtained for benzo-(c)cinnoline are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions and with the results of impedance measurements. The advantages of the two methods are compared.

ChemInform Abstract: Magnetic Exchange Between Metal Ions with Unquenched Orbital Angular Momenta: Basic Concepts and Relevance to Molecular Magnetism
2010
This review article is a first attempt to give a systematic and comprehensive description (in the framework of the unified theoretical approach) of the exchange interactions in polynuclear systems based on orbitally degenerate metal ions in the context of their relevance to the modern molecular magnetism. Interest in these systems is related to the fundamental problems of magnetism and at the same time steered by a number of impressive potential applications of molecular magnets, like high-density memory storage units, nanoscale qubits, spintronics and photoswitchable devices. In the presence of orbital degeneracy, the conventional spin Hamiltonian (Heisenberg–Dirac–van Vleck model) becomes…
A comparison between two feature selection algorithms
2017
This article provides a comparison of two feature selection algorithms, Information Gain Thresholding and Koller and Sahami's algorithm in the context of text document classification on the Reuters Corpus Volume 1 dataset. The algorithms were evaluated by testing the performance of classifiers trained on the features they select from a given dataset. Results show that Koller and Sahami's algorithm consistently outperforms Information Gain Thresholding by capturing interactions between features and avoiding redundancy among features, although it achieves its gains through increased complexity and longer running time.
Extensional deformations during Neogene chain building in Sicily
2010
ABSTRACT In the Madonie-Nebrodi Mts (Northern Sicily belt) both Mesozoic carbonate platform/basin-derived deformed successions and Neogene foredeep deposits outcrop. Thrust sheets piled-up southwards in thin-skin piggy-back sequence. The chain building process began during the Oligo-Miocene. The syntectonic deposits involved in the compressional tectonics give evidence that syn-sedimentary extensional faults developed during fold nucleation and amplification. Syn-sedimentary extensional faults affect the foredeep strata at different stratigraphic levels, which are bounded by unconformities. Normal faults and bedding show constant cut-off relationships and are progressively tilted youngwards…
Thiophene based imino-pyridyl palladium(II) complexes : Synthesis, molecular structures and Heck coupling reactions
2017
The new compounds (5-methyl-2-thiophene-2-pyridyl(R))imine [R = methyl (L1); R = ethyl (L2)] and (5-bromo-2-thiophene-2-pyridyl(R)imine [R = methyl (L3); R = ethyl (L4)] were successfully synthesized via Schiff base condensation reaction and obtained in good yields. These potential ligands were reacted with [PdCl2(COD)] and [PdClMe(COD)] to give the corresponding complexes [PdCl2(L)] (L = L1-L4; 1–4) and [PdClMe(L)] (L = L1-L4; 5–8). All compounds were characterized by IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of 1, 2, 6 and 8 were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The complexes were evaluated as catalyst precursors for standard He…
