Co-teaching as a context for teachers' professional learning and joint knowledge construction

Abstract The study examined two primary teachers' professional learning and joint knowledge construction in the context of co-teaching. The teachers narrated their learning as a collaborative process with serendipitous origins. Shared knowledge construction was crucial in the learning process, as was implementing the resulting new ideas in practice. It is concluded that experiences of co-teaching may support teachers in meeting their professional responsibilities effectively. In this paper we discuss the effects of modelling and computer simulation activities in promoting student use of lines of reasoning useful to explain proposed or observed situations. The activities are part of a structured Teaching/Learning Sequence on surface phenomena in liquids. We outline a model of liquid based on a mesoscopic approach, examples of computer simulations students can use during the activities, and we describe the Teaching/Learning Sequence. In remote sensing image classification, it is commonly assumed that the distribution of the classes is stable over the entire image. This way, training pixels labeled by photointerpretation are assumed to be representative of the whole image. However, differences in distribution of the classes throughout the image make this assumption weak and a model built on a single area may be suboptimal when applied to the rest of the image. A sample of thirty engineering undergraduates, having already attended traditional university physics instruction, was selected for this study. The validity of training samples collected in field campaigns is crucial for the success of land use classification models. However, such samples often suffer from a sample selection bias and do not represent the variability of spectra that can be encountered in the entire image. Therefore, to maximize classification performance, one must perform adaptation of the first model to the new data distribution. This research clarifies how a collaborative team teaching model (CTTM) can support both pre-service and in-service teachers’ professional development in using inquiry-based science teaching in primary schools. The data were collected via a questionnaire-based survey approach after inquiry projects implementation at public schools in four Finnish cities.
