Développement territorial soutenable: l'approche des libertés et ses conséquences pour les politiques d'attractivité

2014

Moving from the concepts of territory as a social construct and of development as the progressive, dynamic fulfilment of self-established goals, the paper aims to show how a genuine strategy of development helps building up a sustainable attractiveness. To achieve this goal, the paper first investigates the accuracy of the Nation Brand Index as a signal of the territorial attractiveness, positive or negative, in a long term perspective. Second, the pertinence of the freedom approach to development in order to fully integrate the sustainability issues is enlightened. Finally, the two models are tied together, thus allowing the mutual links and synergies to appear and corroborating the idea t…

Female Cyborgs, Gender Performance, and Utopian Gaze in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina

2020

The cyborg as a metaphor for cultural encodings of the interaction between humans and technology has been an accepted trope since the publication of Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto.” Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina shares many of its key themes and motifs with earlier science fiction films, from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. A first viewing of the film thus suggests an interpretation that focuses on the film’s portrayal of its female cyborgs Ava and Kyoko as another version of the “pleasure model” in the mode of Lang’s Maria or Scott’s Pris. However, it is the tension between Ava’s intelligence and visual attractiveness and her performance of a female gender …

Television violence: A development of a coding scheme

1997

Traditional analyses have treated TV violence as a homogenous entity disregarding the nature and context of the violent acts. A new coding scheme was designed to examine the amount of violence portrayed on TV; the degree to which it is obtrusive; and the messages it conveys. The final, 37 item coding scheme is sensitive to features of televised messages whether in fiction, or in non‐fiction. It included contextual themes concerning intensity (seriousness, realism, way of dramatization), and attractiveness (justification, glamorization, efficacy) of TV violence. The coding scheme was applied to an analysis of a program sample which consisted of all genres (N = 259) presented on Finnish netwo…

Students Mobility: Assessing the Determinants of Attractiveness Across Competing Territorial Areas

2016

A central question for education authorities has become ‘‘which factors make a territory attractive for tertiary students?’’ Tertiary education is recognised as one of the most important assets for the development of a territory, thus students’ mobility becomes a brain drain issue whenever there are prevalent areas that attract students from other territories. In this paper, we try to identify the most important factors that could affect student mobility in Italy. In doing that we analyse students’ flows across competing territorial areas which supply tertiary education programs. We will consider a wide range of determinants related to the socio-economic characteristics of the areas as well…

SPATIAL PLANNING AS A TOOL FOR IMPROVING ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE PLACES: CASE OF LATGALE REGION

2012

According the new concepts of the regional economics and geographical literature, territorial attractiveness is an issue of growing importance for national, regional and local governments during last years. Territorial attractiveness can be defined both as the capacity to attract new residents, visitors, enterprises and investments as well as the ability to retain and develop mobile communities and assets. Medium-sized and small towns play complementary roles and are differently integrated into urban systems depending on the specific features of the country and the historical, institutional and economic development background, but at the same time its attractiveness has been increasingly re…

Male steroid hormones and female preference for male body odor

2006

It has been suggested that human scent works as a signal in mate selection, but the empirical evidence is scarce. Here, we examined whether women’s olfactory preferences for a man’s scent could be correlated with his testosterone, estradiol, or cortisol concentrations, and whether these preferences change along with the menstrual cycle. In line with previous studies, women in their most fertile period gave the highest attractiveness ratings to all men. However, the intensity ratings by women at different menstrual phases did not significantly differ statistically. Interestingly, we found that cortisol concentration in saliva correlated positively with the attractiveness but not with the int…

Institutional Autonomy and the Attractiveness of the European Higher Education Area – Facts or Tokenistic Discourse?

2012

In the discourse of the Bologna Process, the notion of competitiveness as the focal goal of Bologna Process, and university autonomy as one of its founding principles are consistently linked. Autonomy is framed as a precondition of competitiveness, while competitiveness is framed in terms of attractiveness of European higher education and higher education institutions. This paper examines their relationship, discussing whether there is ground for the repeated policy argument of their going hand in hand. Do the more attractive countries have higher autonomy, are the countries with higher autonomy more attractive? Or are these phenomena linked only in the simplified arguments of the policy di…

Creating Attractive Places for Whom? A Discourse-Theoretical Approach to Knowledge and Planning

2013

We aim to find a way to produce knowledge of attractiveness of place that is representative of the variety and complexity of what attractiveness entails and the same time productive for place development and planning. On the basis of a study of an INTERREG IV A-project in Norway, we question how and by whom the discourse regarding what is attractive about places is constructed and how the implicit or explicit knowledge is treated in local planning. We find that planning must produce knowledge in which the different narratives about place confront each other, and highlight differences and mutual debate between adversaries. We conclude by arguing the case for applying a model of agonistic plu…
