Identification of mycorrhiza-regulated genes with arbuscule development-related expression profile
2004
Suppressive subtractive hybridisation was applied to the analysis of late stage arbuscular mycorrhizal development in pea. 96 cDNA clones were amplified and 81, which carried fragments more than 200 nt in size, were sequence analysed. Among 67 unique fragments, 10 showed no homology and 10 were similar to sequences with unknown function. RNA accumulation of the corresponding 67 genes was analysed by hybridisation of macro-arrays. The cDNAs used as probes were derived from roots of wild type and late mutant pea genotypes, inoculated or not with the AM fungus Glomus mosseae. After calibration, a more than 2.5-fold mycorrhiza-induced RNA accumulation was detected in two independent experiments…
The impact of periodic interviews on unemployment duration : Evidence from the 2017 Finnish reform
2023
In 2017, a Finnish policy reform intensified the Public Employment Services' practice of periodically interviewing unemployed jobseekers. This study used high-quality administrative data to analyse the effect of interviews on unemployment duration. We used a difference-in-differences approach that exploited regional variations in treatment intensity. Our results show that a 10 percentage point increase in interview probability increased the monthly hazard rate of employment by 3.1 per cent, with the effect being strongest among jobseekers aged 25–34 and jobseekers with a low education level. Also, our results demonstrate a strong effect on participation in active labour market programmes. p…
Supportive Communication in the Workplace
2019
Supportive communication is a form of social interaction that produces resources with which to solve situational problems and manage emotional strain. Through the management of uncertainty, supportive communication enhances the perception of personal control over life events and strengthens the perception of acceptance. It is enacted in the seeking of support, in providing support, and in supportive listening as a form of emotional and informational support. In the workplace, supportive communication is crucially important: It promotes productive work and employees’ well-being as well as job satisfaction and engagement in the organization. This chapter presents the foundations of supportive…
Negative emotional consequences of labour market activation policies for long-term unemployed young adults in Finland
2021
PurposeThis article deals with the negative emotional consequences of active labour market policies (ALMPs) for long-term unemployed young adults in Finland. Although such policies may have positive effects, an exploration of their negative impacts reveals their problematic side effects. We explore various aspects of ALMP interventions that prevent individuals from gaining such positive outcomes and thus reduce their motivation to invest in the policies.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the affect theory of social exchange, we understand that individuals seek positive rewards from social interactions. Our data is taken from life course interviews with unemployed people aged 20–31 in cen…
Rural Population in Romania. Development and Tendencies (2000 – 2010)
2013
Abstract Demography is among the top factors which exert an undeniable influence upon the economic environment. Therefore, the populace - through its dynamics and characteristics - leaves an imprint upon the social and economic landscape, being a keen barometer and contributing to economic progress. The relationship demography-economy is extremely tight, since the populace is perceived as being a true representation of what characterizes our economy. Romania originated as a country with an agriculture-based economy – a fact which translated in its major rural population; nowadays, due to a sum of various developments, the rural populace is undergoing a decreasing trend. The situation is all…
Measuring territory student-attractiveness in Italy. Longitudinal evidence
2016
The aim of this paper is to investigate the factors affecting university student mobility in Italy in a longitudinal perspective, by considering the flows across competing territorial areas supplying tertiary education programs. The Bradley-Terry modelling approach based on pair comparisons has been adopted to define the attractiveness of competing territories and a range of determinants related to the socio-economic characteristics of the areas as well as universities’ resources. Data released by the Italian Ministry of Education (MiUR) are analysed for the academic years 2010/2011-2014/2015. The modelling approach considers score values for each territory and year, allowing to evaluate wh…
Pedagogical practices predicting perceived learning of social skills among university students
2022
The aim of this study was to examine what kinds of pedagogical practices predict perceived learning of university students’ social skills in classes where these skills are not set as learning outcomes. Data were collected from students of various disciplines by means of a questionnaire and then analysed using regression analysis. Students’ learning of social skills was explained by pedagogical factors related to 1) the modes of teaching and learning, 2) the features of the constructivist learning environment, 3) the features of the integrative pedagogy, and 4) the circumstances pertaining to the atmosphere of the learning environments involved in their studies. Factors belonging to three of…
The effects on riding performance using active vs passive recovery during a simulated motocross race
2017
Aleix Ollé Casanovas. 2017. The effects on riding performance using active vs passive recovery during a simulated motocross race. University of Jyväskylä. 53p. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of active and passive recovery methods in order to improve physical performance between motocross races. Exercise induced muscle damage post motocross racing was assessed as well. Participants performed 2 races of 30 minutes with one hour break in between. During the break they performed either active or passive recovery protocols. Specific motocross performance outcomes and athlete’s physical conditions were measured during, and before and after every motocross race. Lap times (…
