Chemical-based methodologies approaches to extend the shelf life of fresh fish — a review
2021
Due to its characteristics, fresh fish is a highly perishable food with a very short shelf-life under refrigeration. Several methods have been introduced to slow down its deterioration, such as by means of oxygen depletion of the food package (vacuum packaging), or by changing the natural atmosphere that is in contact with the fresh fish (modified atmosphere packaging), or by the use of chemicals generally recognized as safe: such compounds can be directly applied (by dipping or spraying) or incorporated into packaging materials and slowly migrate to the product, exerting a hurdle effect against microbial development and lipid oxidation (active packaging). This review aims to cover the most…
Electronic excitations of 1,4-disilyl-substituted 1,4-disilabicycloalkanes: a MS-CASPT2 study of the influence of cage size.
2007
We present a multistate complete active space second-order perturbation theory computational study aimed to predict the low-lying electronic excitations of four compounds that can be viewed as two disilane units connected through alkane bridges in a bicyclic cage. The analysis has focused on 1,4-disilyl-1,4-disilabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (1a), 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-disilabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane (1b), 1,4-disilyl-1,4-disilabicyclo[2.1.1]hexane (2a), and 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-disilabicyclo[2.1.1]hexane (2b). The aim has been to find out the nature of the lowest excitations with significant oscillator strengths and to investigate how the cage size affects the excitation energies and the…
Characterization and quantitation of mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates and carboxylic acids by capillary electrophoresis with indirect photometric det…
2003
The separation, characterization, and determination of mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates (AES) and fatty acids (C10-C16) in background electrolytes (BGEs) containing acetonitrile (ACN)-water mixtures is addressed. Due to inhibition of the ionization of the carboxylate groups, the migration time and the resolution between the fatty acids decreased when the water content of the BGE was reduced, but efficiency and resolution between the AES oligomers improved. The migration times increased and resolution improved by substituting 5% ACN by an equivalent amount of dioxane. A complete separation of the two surfactant classes, up to the AES oligomers with 8 ethylene oxide units (EOs) with respect t…
A Highly Active System for the Metal-Free Aerobic Photocyanation of Tertiary Amines with Visible Light: Application to the Synthesis of Tetraponerine…
2015
A highly efficient metal-free catalytic system for the aerobic photocyanation of tertiary amines with visible light is reported. The use of air as terminal oxidant offers an improved safety profile compared with pure oxygen, the used compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) light sources are highly economical, and no halogenated solvents are required. This system not only proves to be effective for a wide variety of trialkylamines, pharmaceuticals, and alkaloids but remarkably also allows the lowest catalyst loading (0.00001 mol% or 0.1 ppm) ever reported for an organic dye. Bruylants reactions and C-alkylation/decyanations were performed on the obtained α-aminonitriles to demonstrate the postfunctio…
Alkylation at the active site of the D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH), a membrane phospholipid-dependent enzyme, by 3-chloroacetyl pyridine ad…
1997
The structure of the rat liver's D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH) active site has been investigated using an affinity alkylating reagent, the 3-chloroacetyl pyridine adenine dinucleotide (3-CAPAD). This NAD+ analogue reagent strongly inactivates the enzyme following a concentration- and time-dependent process with a stoichiometry of approximately 1. The reagent reacts at the coenzyme binding site as revealed by the efficient protection by NADH. The effect of 3-CAPAD is stronger with the enzyme into its natural membrane environment than with the lipid-free purified apoBDH or with the reconstituted apoBDH-mitochondrial phospholipid complex. The pH-dependent effect on the inactivation p…
A Refractive Index Sensor Based on the Resonant Coupling to Cladding Modes in a Fiber Loop
2013
We report an easy-to-build, compact, and low-cost optical fiber refractive index sensor. It consists of a single fiber loop whose transmission spectra exhibit a series of notches produced by the resonant coupling between the fundamental mode and the cladding modes in a uniformly bent fiber. The wavelength of the notches, distributed in a wavelength span from 1,400 to 1,700 nm, can be tuned by adjusting the diameter of the fiber loop and are sensitive to refractive index changes of the external medium. Sensitivities of 170 and 800 nm per refractive index unit for water solutions and for the refractive index interval 1.40-1.442, respectively, are demonstrated. We estimate a long range resolut…
Perceived barriers to active commuting to school: reliability and validity of a scale
2016

Paramagnetic NMR investigations of Co(II) and Ni(II) amicyanin.
1999
The paramagnetic 1H NMR spectra of the Co(II) and Ni(II) substituted forms of the type 1 blue copper protein (cupredoxin) amicyanin have been assigned. This is the first such analysis of a cupredoxin, which has a distorted tetrahedral active site with the ligands provided by two histidines, a cysteine and a methionine. The isotropic shifts of the resonances in these spectra are compared with those of Co(II) and Ni(II) azurin. A number of interesting similarities and differences are found. The coordination of the metal by the two equatorial histidine ligands is very similar in both proteins. The interaction between the introduced metal and the thiolate sulfur of the equatorial cysteine ligan…
Activation of classical protein kinase C decreases transport via systems y+and y+L
2007
Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) downregulates the human cationic amino acid transporters hCAT-1 (SLC7A1) and hCAT-3 (SLC7A3) (Rotmann A, Strand D, Martiné U, Closs EI. J Biol Chem 279: 54185–54192, 2004; Rotmann A, Vekony N, Gassner D, Niegisch G, Strand D, Martine U, Closs EI. Biochem J 395: 117–123, 2006). However, others found that PKC increased arginine transport in various mammalian cell types, suggesting that the expression of different arginine transporters might be responsible for the opposite PKC effects. We thus investigated the consequence of PKC activation by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) in various human cell lines expressing leucine-insensitive system y+[hCAT-1, h…
