The role of snow leopard predation in determine prey recruitment: a synthetic study of abiotic, bottom-up and top-down influences on the Tibetan Plat…

2018

Ungulate populations could either be limited by resources (bottom-up control) or be regulated by predation (top-down control). Consequently, for ungulates and their predators, conservation strategies may need to differ depending on the predominance of either of these forces at any given time period. Livestock competition, snow leopard Panthera uncia predation, and snow disaster in winter are three main forces affecting recruitment of blue sheep Pseudois nayaur, the major wild prey of snow leopards on the Tibetan Plateau. To answer the question which of them is the dominant force regulating blue sheep population, we selected seven study sites representing a gradient of livestock grazing pres…

Drivers of forest β-diversity in different organisms and its relevance for conservation

2018

Land-use intensity has been shown to not only affect local alpha-diversity, but also beta-diversity, i.e. the turnover of species among sites, resulting in a homogenization of communities at landscape scale [1]. Thus, for the conservation of forest biodiversity at larger spatial scales beta-diversity needs to be considered. However, the drivers of forest beta-diversity and its underlying processes in different taxonomic and functional groups are yet not well understood. We studied the drivers of beta-diversity in 15 organism groups from bacteria to vertebrates across 150 forest sites (unmanaged and managed beech, managed conifer) in three region of Germany, including environmental drivers (…

Hunting as a source of alien species: a European review

2018

Invasive alien species (IAS) have been identified as one of the most important direct drivers of biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and ecosystem service changes. The threats posed by IAS have consequently been addressed through the development of many international policy instruments, guidelines and technical tools. In this context, understanding the pathways of species introductions constitutes a key issue as regards managing and preventing further invasive events. The most common motivation for the introduction of plant and animal species into new areas has by far been the establishment of new food sources. In Europe, hunting is a social and cultural activity in which millions of p…

Research of abandoned Tibetan mastiffs and interaction with local carnivores in Sanjiangyuan National Natural Reserve, Tibetan Plateau

2018

Between 2000-2012, a high market demand for Tibetan mastiffs stimulated dog raising in Tibetan Plateau but soon collapsed market led to abandonment of dogs. Due to high reproductive ability and adaptability, increased free-ranging dogs are emerging threat to local wildlife including snow leopards, which are an endangered and flagship species that helps maintain the health of whole local ecosystem. Because monks often offer food and shelters, the abandoned dogs tend to gather around monasteries, which are usually located in snow leopard habitats. Through assessing the density, distribution patterns, social structure, activity patterns, diets, and parasites of both free-ranging dogs and snow …

Human neonatal responses to androstenone

2010

Poster P327 session VII: Olfactory Psychophysics & Clinical Studies; Central Olfaction; Aims. Human newborns show equal attraction to the odors of amniotic. fluid (AF) and mothers’ colostrum [1]. As 5-a-androst-16-en-3-. one (An) has been found in both fluids [2, 3], we studied it as a. potential vector of this perinatal odor continuity and of neonatal. attraction to the smell of breast and milk [4]. Methods. Two studies. were run. 1) We recorded the behavior of 16 newborns (3 days) and. 26 adults exposed to a saturating water solution of An and to 3. reference odorants [butyric acid, B; vanilla, V; water, W]. 2) We videotaped. 26 newborns (3 days) being administered 7 stimuli: 4 dilution. …

Intensive Management and Natural Genetic Variation in Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)

2017

The current magnitude of big-game hunting has outpaced the natural growth of populations, making artificial breeding necessary to rapidly boost hunted populations. In this study, we evaluated if the rapid increase of red deer (Cervus elaphus) abundance, caused by the growing popularity of big-game hunting, has impacted the natural genetic diversity of the species. We compared several genetic diversity metrics between 37 fenced populations subject to intensive management and 21 wild free-ranging populations. We also included a historically protected population from a national park as a baseline for comparisons. Contrary to expectations, our results showed no significant differences in geneti…

Bedringsprosesser i et hverdagsperspektiv : Hvilken betydning kan mestring av daglige aktiviteter ha for rusmiddelavhengiges vei mot rusfrihet og opp…

2017

Masteroppgave psykisk helsearbeid ME504 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 The World Health Organization expects mental illnesses, including drug addiction, to be the main cause of disease in Western countries by 2020. Recommended measures in order to meet these health challenges are facilitating recovery, empowerment, local services and social inclusion. The purpose of this study has been to investigate which importance coping with daily activities has for drug addicts in a rehabilitation phase. The study is qualitative with a phenomenological starting point. Through individual interviews with four drug addicts, we wanted them to describe their everyday life activities. The subjects were living …

Basking in Reflected Glory and Blasting : Differences in identity management strategies between two groups of highly identified soccer fans

2007

This study examines in soccer fanzine two identity management strategies - BIRGing and blasting -- of two groups of highly identified soccer fans with allegiance to the same team. Results showed strong support for the BIRG phenomenon among both ultra fans groups but little evidence of the blasting phenomenon among either group. The implications of these findings are discussed in regards to social identity management among sport fans.

Mental toughness in elite and sub-elite female soccer players

2017

Mental toughness (MT) is seen as an important psychological factor in the athletic success of elite athletes. Research on the subject has usually concerned male athletes. Our purpose was to investigate whether there are differences in mental toughness between female players who compete in an elite league and those who play at lower levels. In total, 298 female soccer players (M = 20.7 years, SD = 3.7 years) from three levels of Norwegian soccer responded to the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire. The MT Constancy subscale was removed from analysis due to an unacceptable Cronbach alpha (0.57). The results revealed that elite league players had significantly higher MT Global scores than th…
