Clinical assessment and comparison of ACL reconstruction using synthetic graft (Neoligaments versus FiberTape).
2021
Background Due to the low potential for primary biological healing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the most popular approach is currently reconstruction using a graft. Recent research indicates that the technique of strengthening a damaged ligament with synthetic tapes (internal bracing) may be an alternative to reconstructive treatment, especially in cases of partial ACL damage. Objectives To compare and evaluate the possibility of using a synthetic graft (Neoligaments or FiberTape) to treat partial lesions of the ACL. Material and methods This was a retrospective cohort study. Selected from a pool of 128 patients undergoing primary unilateral intra-articular ACL reconstruction du…
Affect self-regulation through music
2018
The present dissertation focused on musical affect regulation, i.e. on the use of music to self-regulate affective states such as emotions, moods, and energy levels. In publication I, relevant findings from previous research were extracted and the field’s conceptual clarity and precision was assessed. Besides identifying weaknesses in conceptualization and providing recommendations for future studies, publication I found that not all the elements of affect regulation through music have been equally explored by research. Given the gap observed on the study of musical mechanisms underlying affect regulation, publication II placed a special focus on this component and its association with regu…
Validação da versão em espanhol do inventário multidimensional do perfeccionismo em jovens futebolistas
2020
The Multidimensional Inventory of Perfectionism in Sport (MIPS) is one sport specific measure of perfectionism developed on the basis of a combination of different multidimensional models. This study assesses the psychometrics of the MIPS in a Spanish sample of young footballers. Participants were 429 Spanish football players with ages ranging from 9 to 13 years. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that a two-dimensional model obtained adequate fit indices and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients showed acceptablelevels of internal reliability. The criterion and convergent validity of the Spanish MIPS analysed in young footballers was also confirmed via its association with measures of sport anxie…
Modernizing the Police with Research, Development and Innovation Activities : The Transition of the Finnish Police Education into a Bachelor’s Degree
2017
The social context and the operational environment of the police has changed considerably around the world. Recently, that change has necessitated a restructuring in the Finnish police education. This reform is based on the belief that a higher level of education and a greater focus on research will lead to better professional skills and an increased ability to perform in the workplace. In this article, we examine the views of the staff of the Finnish Police University College on research, development and innovation activities (RDI) in the light of a survey answered by the staff. We pay special attention to the connection between the teacher’s level of different skill areas and the experien…
Association of emotional intelligence with resilience and work engagement in sports coaches
2021
Problem statement. Sports coaching is recognized as a stressful and challenging profession due to several different aspects such as organizational, performance, contextual, interpersonal, and intrapersonal stressors that coaches face. High level of work stress is a risk factor for decreased well-being at work. Sports coaches’ wellbeing not only matters to coaches themselves but plays a significant role in athlete performance and well-being as well. Approach. There is research evidence on sports coaches’ stress and burnout. There is, however, little knowledge on personal resources that enhance sports coach’s well-being at work. Therefore, studies that examine personal resource factors that f…
Pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy in implementing inclusive practices and resilience in Finland
2021
This study aims to explore Finnish pre-service teachers' self-efficacy in implementing inclusive education and their resilience. Survey data were collected from 105 pre-service teachers studying in a teacher education programme in one university in Finland. The relationships between pre-service teachers' self-efficacy in implementing inclusive practices, their perceived resilience, and background variables were examined using structural equation modelling. The results confirmed a three-factor structure for self-efficacy in implementing inclusive practices among the pre-service teachers. In addition, pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy was the strongest variable that related to their resilie…
Migratory behaviour and holding habitats of adult river lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) in two Finnish rivers
2015
The effect of environmental factors on migratory activity of adult river lampreys entering the Kalajoki and Perhonjoki, rivers in Finland, for spawning was studied using correlation and regression analyses. Telemetric tracking of 60 individuals was utilized to study the migratory patterns and holding habitat requirements of adult river lampreys. The increases in the river discharge, wind forcing towards the river mouth and speed and magnitude of river water cooling had positive effects on the numbers of lampreys entering the rivers whereas the increase in the illumination intensity of the moon had a negative effect on their migration activity. Radio-tagged lampreys typically passed slow-flo…
Foot and Lower Limb Clinical and Structural Changes in Overuse Injured Recreational Runners Using Floating Heel Shoes: Preliminary Results of a Rando…
2021
Foot-strike and the associated load rate are factors related to overuse injuries in runners. The purpose of this study was to analyse structural and functional changes in runners using floating heel running shoes, compared with runners using conventional footwear. A randomised control trial was conducted. Twenty runners with overuse injuries were followed over a 12-week gait retraining programme using floating heel running shoes or their conventional footwear. Pain was measured with pressure pain thresholds (PPTs), structural changes were measured with ultrasonography, and severity and impact of injury was scored on the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre Overuse Injury Questionnaire (OSTRC-…
High training volume is associated with increased prevalence of non-allergic asthma in competitive cross-country skiers.
2022
BackgroundCross-country skiers have a high prevalence of asthma, but its phenotypes and association with success in competitions are not known.ObjectiveTo investigate, by means of a postal survey, the relative proportions of allergic and non-allergic asthma in competitive cross-country skiers compared with the general population, to study how performance level and training volume are related to asthma and its type and to assess the possible risk factors for allergic and non-allergic asthma in competitive skiers.MethodsAll Finnish cross-country skiers enrolled in the largest national competitions in winter 2019 (n=1282), and a random sample (n=1754) of the general population of the same age …
