Patient with Kabuki syndrome and acute leukemia

Kabuki syndrome is a multiple congenital anomaly/mental retardation syndrome which often involves recurrent infections. There is cumulative evidence of an immunodeficiency in Kabuki patients. We report a 2-year-old girl with typical Kabuki syndrome, who developed acute lymphocytic leukemia. The patient showed low levels of immunoglobulins G and A and a history of recurrent infections, that might indicate an immunodeficiency leading to an increased susceptibility to cancer. The girl was treated according to BFM protocols adapted to the patient's impaired cardiac situation and severe underweight. She achieved continual complete remission. Upregulation of miR-29a and genomic DNA hypermethylation in normal karyotype AML showing DNMT3A mutation

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) is frequently associated to normal karyotype and DNMT3A mutations (R882). Since we previously demonstrated distinctive miRNA expression in some AML groups, we study 384 miRNA in 9 selected DNMT3A-mutated NK-AML patients. Comparing these data with our previous results obtained in 31 DNMT3A-unmutated AML, we focused on a significant up-regulation of miR-155, miR-29a, miR-196b and miR-25. Till now it was possible only to investigate this organ by cytological and histological methods. Clinical function tests of the spleen were completely unknown until recently. Such investigations have now become possible by labeling the blood cells with gamma-emitting radioisotopes and the development of external counting techniques.

The aim of this study was to assess the fitness levels and possible deficits in physical performance in children with a diagnosis of childhood acute leukemia and lymphoma after 10 months of therapy ending through a specific test battery. A total of 58 subjects were enrolled in this study. These patients frequently develop resistance to diuretic therapy, so that ultrafiltration should be applied in emergency for saving them.
