Co-design of a Virtual Training Tool with Emergency Management Stakeholders for Extreme Weather Response
2018
Emergency services usually prepare for the most frequent or predictable types of disasters, such as fires. However, preparation for complex, unpredictable disaster scenarios is infrequent, probably because of high resource demand and difficulty of covering dynamic training needs of multiple stakeholders. The use of serious game techniques as the core of simulated or virtual training tools opens for new ways of training and learning in emergency and crisis scenarios. However, the number of virtual training tools customized to specific disaster or crisis scenario that address needs of diverse user groups is limited. Existing tools are often tailored with a particular geographical setting and …
Decentralization and heterogeneity in complex adaptative systems
2015
Purpose – Following a bacterial-based modeling approach, the authors want to model and analyze the impact of both decentralization and heterogeneity on group behavior and collective learning. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Inspired by bacterial conjugation, the authors have defined an artificial society in which agents’ strategies adapt to changes in resources location, allowing migration, and survival in a dynamic sugarscape-like scenario. To study the impact of these variables the authors have simulated a scenario in which resources are limited and localized. The authors also have defined three constraints in genetic information processing (inhibiti…
How to combine tools and methods in practice— a field study
1990
In spring 1989 we surveyed the experiences of some Finnish companies in methodology modelling (metamodelling) and adaptation of tools and methodologies to each other (methodology adaptation). The companies represented software production, banking, wood and metal industry, and wholesale trade. The study was carried out as a field study where we interviewed method developers, systems analysts and their supervisors. The goal of the survey was to find out whether there was need for metamodelling or methodology adaptation in general and how this need had been satisfied. The study shows that a little experience had been gained in adapting data dictionaries to methodologies but no such attempts ha…
Adaptation of Risk Sharing Partnerships (RSP) to New Industries
2020
The aerospace industry has since the 1990s used a partnership model called Risk Sharing Partnerships (RSP) to handle certain challenges faced in the development of new aircrafts. The RSP model allows the client to include key suppliers in the development of a new product, and hence sharing the burden of investment, risk mitigation, as well as the future sales income. This makes it easier to acquire funding for the development of new products and technologies, in addition to accelerating the development process by including key competencies earlier (Buzacott and Peng in Eur J Oper Res 218:656–666, 2012). RSP have raised interest in other industries, which calls for increased knowledge of con…
The culture of product development in student organisations
2021
Product development in a multidisciplinary student organisation brings many challenges; varyingexperience, adaptation and involvement of members. This article will discuss how a multidisciplinarystudent project maintains a learning culture for product development and project management. The identified factors for a learning culture; 1) define product specifications, 2) involvealumnis, 3) facilitate an open minded culture for failure and learning and 4) collect experience andadapt an agile framework suitable for the project. These are factors that should be an implementedpart to increase the chances of maintaining a learning culture.Align Racing UiA, the case of this study, is a student organ…
A guide to indicators for the evaluation of specialist autism centres, based on the quality-of-life model
2017
Objective: The evaluation of individual and organizational quality of life through the Guide to Quality-of-Life Indicators and its promotion in English-speaking areas. This guide was initially designed for people living with Autism Spectrum Disorder in specialist autism centers in Spanish and Italian-speaking areas where its effectiveness has been validated. Method: The Delphi technique is applied to the design of a qualitative investigation, with expert validation for the adaptation to English-speaking areas. Results: The results have facilitated the adaptation and validation of the tool, which has 68 indicators grouped into six areas, for its application in both the planning and the evalu…
A Randomised Controlled Trial to Test the Effectiveness of Planning Strategies to Improve Medication Adherence in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease
2017
Background Low levels of adherence to medication prescribed to treat and manage chronic disease may lead to maladaptive health outcomes. Theory-based, easy-to-administer interventions that promote patients’ effective self-regulation of their medication-taking behaviour are needed if adherence is to be maximised. We tested the effectiveness of an intervention adopting planning techniques to promote medication adherence. Methods Outpatients with cardiovascular disease (N = 71) were allocated to either an experimental condition, in which participants were asked to form implementation intentions and coping plans related to their treatment, or to a no-planning control condition, in which partici…
Marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by the CAD-CA systems and the direct method before and after thermocycling
2020
Background Limited information is available regarding the marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by different techniques from different materials. Also, the efficacy of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems for their fabrication is still questionable. This study aimed to assess the marginal adaptation of three-unit interim restorations fabricated by the CAD-CAM systems and the direct method from different materials before and after thermocycling. Material and Methods A sound mandibular second premolar and a second molar were prepared for a three-unit all-ceramic restoration. Metal dies were fabricated to simulate a case of mandibular…
Larval zebrafish proteome regulation in response to an environmental challenge
2019
Adaptation to the environment during development influences the life-long survival of an animal. While brain-wide proteomic changes are expected to underlie such experience-driven physiological and behavioral flexibility, a comprehensive overview of the nature and extent of the proteomic regulation following an environmental challenge during development is currently lacking. In this study, the brain proteome of larval zebrafish is identified and it is determined how it is altered by an exposure to a natural and physical environmental challenge, namely prolonged exposure to strong water currents. A comprehensive larval zebrafish brain proteome is presented here. Furthermore, 57 proteins that…
Link adaptation with combined optimal frame size and rate selection in error-prone 802.11n networks
2008
In error-prone channel with low SNRs, the network throughput may drop significantly if the packet length becomes too large. On the other hand, too much protocol overhead will be introduced if the packet length is too small. In this paper, we study this tradeoff and propose an adaptive frame size algorithm for A-MPDU in 802.11n networks, which can maximize the throughput by selecting the optimized frame length under different channel conditions. When used together with rate selection, the network throughput can be further improved. Both analytical model and simulation results are presented, demonstrating that our algorithm outperforms the fixed length transmission scheme in 802.11n networks …
