Agricultural and Biotechnology Patents as an Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change: A Regional Analysis of European Farmer’s Efficiency

2022

This chapter analyses the effect of innovation encouraged by climate change challenges on European farmers’ technical efficiency. Using the stochastic frontier approach, we estimate the impact of agri-cultural patents on farmers’ technical efficiency by taking into account both unobservable heterogeneity and heteroscedasticity in the inefficiency term. Our findings suggest that European farmers remain quite far from the maximum frontier and irrespective of the country in which they reside; farmers who innovate are more efficient than those who do not. Thus, the inefficiency of agricultural agents in the European context leaves space for policies that incentivise firms to adopt climate chang…

Impact of Distressing Media Imagery on Children

2016

Children are particularly fragile and vulnerable to the impact of traumatic events or their mediated representation because they lack the skills and experience in the management of difficult information. Children have different concepts of health and disaster than adults and institutions, depending mainly on their cognitive, emotional, social, psychological, and physical development. If left alone with threatening messages, children are less able to fully understand the information to which they had been exposed. Therefore, they may fail to integrate the external data into their psychological schema of coping strategies. Children usually count on caregivers to deal with stressors, and they …

A Polish Adaptation of the Multidimensional Existential Meaning Scale: Internal Structure, Reliability, and Validity

2020

The aim of this article was to present a Polish adaptation of the Multidimensional Existential Meaning Scale (MEMS) developed by George and Park (2017). The scale proposes a tripartite view of meaning in life, measuring it in three different dimensions: Comprehension, Purpose, and Mattering, which is a new interesting approach to the conceptualization of this factor from a broader, existential perspective. The scale testing procedure involved a research sample consisting of 401 participants. In addition to the MEMS scale, the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Purpose in Life Test (PIL) were used. The results obtained with the Polish version confirmed its reliability and validity, …

Optimal Adaptive Inspection Planning Process in Service of Fatigued Aircraft Structures

2009

In this paper, a control theory is used for planning inspections in service of fatigue-sensitive aircraft structure components under crack propagation. One of the most important features of control theory is its great generality, enabling one to analyze diverse systems within one unified framework. A key idea, which has emerged from this study, is the necessity of viewing the process of planning in-service inspections as an adaptive control process. Adaptation means the ability of self-modification and self-adjustment in accordance with varying conditions of environment. The adaptive control of inspection planning process in service of fatigued aircraft structures differs from ordinary stoc…

A Differential Evolution Framework with Ensemble of Parameters and Strategies and Pool of Local Search Algorithms

2014

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. The ensemble structure is a computational intelligence supervised strategy consisting of a pool of multiple operators that compete among each other for being selected, and an adaptation mechanism that tends to reward the most successful operators. In this paper we extend the idea of the ensemble to multiple local search logics. In a memetic fashion, the search structure of an ensemble framework cooperatively/competitively optimizes the problem jointly with a pool of diverse local search algorithms. In this way, the algorithm progressively adapts…

Effect of disinfecting the cavity with chlorhexidine on the marginal gaps of Cl V giomer restorations

2017

Background Considering the effect of cavity disinfecting agents on the bonding and sealing ability of restorations bonded to dentin, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine (CHX) disinfecting agent on the marginal gaps of Cl V giomer restorations. Material and Methods Cl V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 60 sound bovine permanent incisors in this in vitro study, with the occlusal and gingival margins in enamel and dentin, respectively. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n=30). The teeth in groups 1 and 2 were restored without and with the use of the disinfecting agent in the cavity, respectively, before applying the adhesive. BeautiBo…

Development of Counting Skills: Role of Spontaneous Focusing on Numerosity and Subitizing-Based Enumeration

2007

Children differ in how much they spontaneously pay attention to quantitative aspects of their natural environment. We studied how this spontaneous tendency to focus on numerosity (SFON) is related to subitizing-based enumeration and verbal and object counting skills. In this exploratory study, children were tested individually at the age of 4–5 years on these skills. Results showed 2 primary relationships in children's number skills development. Performance in a number sequence production task, which is closely related to ordinal number sequence without reference to cardinality, is directly associated with SFON. Second, the association of SFON and object counting skills, which require relat…

Effect of the host plant on the immunity of a phytophagous insect : influence of grape variety on the ability of the European grapevine moth to defen…

2013

In tritrophic interactions involving phytophagous insects, host plants and natural enemies, trophic levels are highly dependent on each other. Host plant may strongly affect directly phytophagous insect and indirectly natural enemies growing on these phytophagous insects. When a natural enemy attacks a phytophagous insect, the host immune system constitutes the last chance for the host to survive to an infection. A great variation of insect immune system is generally found in populations for susceptibility to pathogens, suggesting that variable selection pressures may have shaped and driven adaptation of immune traits. This project aims to determine the influence of both host plant and natu…

How to bring urban and global climate studies together with urban planning and architecture?

2020

Abstract Climate friendly urban planning plays a key role in climate change mitigation and adaptation and allows for sustainable development of living conditions for future generations. It has been long understood that measures such as urban greening, planted facades and roofs or highly reflecting building materials are able to dampen excess heat and help reducing energetic costs. Transferring scientific and often theoretical knowledge into actual urban planning however necessarily involves an interdisciplinary dialogue. This paper intends to provide a review of existing literature from a meteorological perspective in order to answer the question how results from urban climate studies can b…

Normative Principles for Adaptation to Climate Change Policy Design and Governance

2012

Recognising climate change as a highly complicated and basically unstructured problem, the purpose of this paper is to suggest a theoretical frame supplemented with practical elements for adaptation to climate change policy design in the context of the requirements of sustainable development normative principles and criteria. The paper attempts to break the business-as-usual approach to policy design and decision-making practice concerning complicated and unstructured problems. The first recommendation for achieving that purpose is the application of a systemic and analytical approach to the elaboration process of adaptation policy, required by the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Cl…
