A state-space approach to mathematical modeling and parameters identification of vehicle frontal crash

2014

In this paper a state-space estimation procedure that relies on the time-domain analysis of input and output signals is used for mathematical modeling of vehicle frontal crash. The model is a double-spring–mass–damper system, whereby the front mass and real mass represent the chassis and the passenger compartment, respectively. It is observed that the dynamic crash of the model is closer to the dynamic crash from experimental when the mass of the chassis is greater than the mass of the passenger compartment. The dynamic crash depends on pole placement and the estimated parameters. It is noted that when the poles of the model are closer to zero, the dynamic crash of the model is far from the…

TQM and Innovation: Controversial Issues Surrounding the Impact of Formalization over Radical Innovation

2015

The purpose of this chapter is to better understand the influence of total quality management (TQM) practices on innovation, examining the conflicting issues that surround the impact of process management implementation and the effects of subsequent formalization on radical innovation. We consider several arguments that appear in the literature, as well as empirical research findings on this topic, discussing how TQM can stimulate a context that favors innovation, putting all the experience and competences of the firm at the service of innovation goals, or conversely, considering the potential barriers that process management and formalization can build against radical innovation. An extens…

How software development competences change in global settings-an explorative study

2014

Global software development GSD holds various challenges and problems for team members. When confronted with a contextual change in their working environment, individuals have to adapt to the new situation. This includes the adaptation of working styles, behaviors, and methods. Additionally, new challenges, especially those based on the virtual work and cultural background of team members, have to be addressed. By conducting explorative expert interviews, we identified challenges and potential solutions for individuals when encountering contextual change with a focus on competences. We identified that the lack of competences was seen as a major influence factor for a variety of common chall…

Optimum design for work-hardening adaptation

1977

Abstract The finite element-linear programming approach and the work-hardening adaptation criterion are used to formulate a general theory of optimum design of rigid-work-hardening structures subjected to loads which vary statically within given limits. Self-weight, as well as some technological constraints, can be introduced into the framework of the optimization problem. The optimality conditions are discussed with the aid of geometrical descriptions as well, and a comparison is made with the standard limit design. Numerical applications are given for a plane truss and a plane frame with axial force-bending moment interaction.

Scars Collaborative Telediagnosis Platform Using Adaptive Image Flow

2013

International audience; Telemedicine has been developed to allow practitioners to remotely connect with patients and with other medical staff. We propose a new system (hardware and software), named DICODERM (COllaborative DIagnosis of DERMatosis), which makes it possible to monitor the evolution of scars after the excision of a tumorous dermatosis (like melanoma). The hardware part of this system is composed of a new optical innovative probe with which two types of images can be acquired simultaneously: anatomic with a white light image and functional with a fluorescence image (using autofluorescence from the protoporphyrin within the cancer cell). The software part is composed of two compon…

Memetic Differential Evolution Frameworks in Filter Design for Defect Detection in Paper Production

2009

This chapter studies and analyzes Memetic Differential Evolution (MDE) Frameworks for designing digital filters, which aim at detecting paper defects produced during an industrial process. MDE Frameworks employ the Differential Evolution (DE) as an evolutionary framework and a list of local searchers adaptively coordinated by a control scheme. Here, three different variants of MDE are taken into account and their features and performance are compared. The binomial explorative features of the DE framework in contraposition to the exploitative features of the local searcher are analyzed in detail in light of the stagnation prevention problem, typical for the DE. Much emphasis in this chapter …

Business models to offer customized output in electronic commerce

2003

Seller-driven business models (e.g. online bookstores) have been successfully implemented and concretized in Electronic Commerce both in practice and science in the last years. In contrast to this we can depict that more customer-driven business models are implemented in the beginning. One major problem of customizable products and services in Electronic Commerce can be found in the adaptation of the human advisory activity which is inevitable in the traditional sale. For this reason we depict the customization in the customer's view and the corresponding business models in electronic markets. Main focus will be on the improvement of the communication interface between customer and seller i…

Peripheral Centralities: An Integrated Approach

2017

Effect of Channel-Quality Indicator Delay on HSDPA Performance

2007

This paper evaluates the effect of the channel estimation inaccuracy on the performance of an HSDPA system. This study provides some results from system level simulations that have been conducted over a very complete dynamic simulator which models an HSDPA system full compliant with specifications. This emulator allows performing multi-user transmission and link adaptation with a limited modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection based on the channel quality indicator (CQI) modes. Many factors such as the user equipment (UE) speed, the employed scheduling algorithm or the traffic load have been considered in the assessment. Moreover the intrinsic constraints of a WCDMA system like HSDPA h…

Robust Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) selection in LTE systems using reinforcement learning

2014

Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) in LTE networks is commonly employed to improve system throughput by ensuring more reliable transmissions. Most of existing AMC methods select the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) using pre-computed mappings between MCS indexes and channel quality indicator (CQI) feedbacks that are periodically sent by the receivers. However, the effectiveness of this approach heavily depends on the assumed channel model. In addition CQI feedback delays may cause throughput losses. In this paper we design a new AMC scheme that exploits a reinforcement learning algorithm to adjust at run-time the MCS selection rules based on the knowledge of the effect of previous AMC d…
