Ultrasonic phased array inspection of wire plus arc additive manufacture samples using conventional and total focusing method imaging approaches

In this study, three aluminium samples produced by wire + arc additive manufacture (WAAM) are inspected using ultrasonic phased array technology. Artificial defects are machined using a centre drill, ø 3 mm, and electrical discharge machining (EDM), ø 0.5-1 mm, in a cylindrical through-hole topology. The samples are first inspected using a single-element wheel probe mounted on a KUKA robot in order to investigate the feasibility of using a conventional ultrasonic transducer approach. Unfortunately, the wheel probe is found to be unsuitable for scanning the WAAM specimens and ultrasonic phased arrays are employed next. Parallel Schwarz methods for convection-dominated semilinear diffusion problems

AbstractParallel two-level Schwarz methods are proposed for the numerical solution of convection-diffusion problems, with the emphasis on convection-dominated problems. Two variants of the methodology are investigated. They differ from each other by the type of boundary conditions (Dirichlet- or Neumann-type) posed on a part of the second-level subdomain interfaces. Convergence properties of the two-level Schwarz methods are experimentally compared with those of a variant of the standard multi-domain Schwarz alternating method. Numerical experiments performed on a distributed memory multiprocessor computer illustrate parallel efficiency of the methods.

Performance analysis of binary DPSK modulation schemes over Hoyt fading channels

This paper presents a performance analysis of differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation schemes over Hoyt fading channels. Based upon the theory of DPSK modulation and a recently derived formula for the probability density function (PDF) of the differential phase between two Hoyt vectors contaminated by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), the bit error probability (BEP) for DPSK systems with noncoherent demodulation over Hoyt channels is analyzed. The popularity of ionic liquids (ILs) has grown during the last decades in several analytical separation techniques. Consequently, the number of reports devoted to the applications of ILs is still increasing. This review is focused on the use of ILs (mainly imidazolium-based associated to chloride and tetrafluoroborate) as mobile phase additives in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Effect of high pressure on the antimicrobial activity and secondary structure of the bacteriocin nisin

International audience; Effect of high pressure (HP) treatment on the antimicrobial properties and the structure of nisin was evaluated. Nisin solutions at pH 2.8 or 6.1 were treated by HP at 500 MPa – 10 min – 20 °C and their antimicrobial potency was determined. It appeared that HP clearly impacted the antimicrobial activity of nisin, with respective activity loss of 22.5% and 49.9% at pH 2.8 and 6.1. Structural analysis of nisin by circular dichroism and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopies revealed that the decrease of nisin antimicrobial activity was likely due to the unfolding of the protein induced by HP. Equivariant Triviality of Quasi-Monomial Triangular $$\mathbb{G}_{a}$$-Actions on $$\mathbb{A}^{4}$$

We give a direct and self-contained proof of the fact that additive group actions on affine four-space generated by certain types of triangular derivations are translations whenever they are proper. The argument, which is based on explicit techniques, provides an illustration of the difficulties encountered and an introduction to the more abstract methods which were used recently by the authors to solve the general triangular case.

Monosodium benzoate hypersensitivity in subjects with persistent rhinitis

Background:  Very few data are available from the literature on whether nonatopic subjects affected by persistent rhinitis may show the appearance of objective symptoms of rhinitis after the ingestion of food additives such as tartrazine (E102), erythrosine (E127), monosodium benzoate (E211), p-hydroxybenzoate (E218), sodium metabisulphite (E223), and monosodium glutamate (E620). Additivity of effective quadrupole moments and angular momentum alignments in the A~130 nuclei

The additivity principle of the extreme shell model stipulates that an average value of a one-body operator be equal to the sum of the core contribution and effective contributions of valence (particle or hole) nucleons. For quadrupole moment and angular momentum operators, we test this principle for highly and superdeformed rotational bands in the A~130 nuclei. Calculations are done in the self-consistent cranked non-relativistic Hartree-Fock and relativistic Hartree mean-field approaches. Results indicate that the additivity principle is a valid concept that justifies the use of an extreme single-particle model in an unpaired regime typical of high angular momenta.

We propose a low complexity analog joint source channel coding Multiple Description (MD) scheme for transmitting the symbols of a Gaussian source across a pair of independent AWGN channels. The outputs of these channels have each a separated receiver, whereas a third receiver has both outputs available. At the transmitter side, a pair of bandwidth-reduction analog mappings are used for joint source-channel coding.
