Adrenal myelolipoma associated with adenoma

2004

The association of an adrenal myelolipoma with a non-functioning adenoma is very rare. Herein, we report on such a case in an asymptomatic 64-year-old woman. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one other case of non-functioning adrenocortical adenoma associated with myelolipoma in the same gland. Furthermore, only two other adenomas (mineral corticoids and corticosteroid producing tumors) associated with myelolipomas have been reported, and both myelolipomas were less than 1 cm in size. In conclusion, the 8.5 cm myelolipoma in our case is the largest compared with the three previously reported ones.

Invagination of the Sphenoid Sinus Mucosa after Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Approach and Its Significance

2016

Objective To describe the clinical features of invagination of the sphenoid sinus mucosa (ISM) and compare them with other similar cases using a visual analog scale (VAS) to assess the various nasal symptoms and to discuss its clinical significance and means of prevention. Study design Retrospective chart review at a tertiary referral center. Methods Between 2010 and 2015, 8 patients who had undergone EETSA surgery displayed postoperative ISM. The comparison group consisted of 147 patients who underwent the same surgical procedures and were diagnosed with the same diseases. Pre- or postoperative paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNS CT) and VAS were performed and subsequently analyzed. R…

Insight into genetic susceptibility to male breast cancer by multigene panel testing: results from a multicenter study in Italy

2019

Breast cancer (BC) in men is rare and genetic predisposition is likely to play a relevant role in its etiology. Inherited mutations in BRCA1/2 account for about 13% of all cases and additional genes that may contribute to the missing heritability need to be investigated. In our study, a well-characterized series of 523 male BC (MBC) patients from the Italian multicenter study on MBC, enriched for non-BRCA1/2 MBC cases, was screened by a multigene custom panel of 50 cancer-associated genes. The main clinical-pathologic characteristics of MBC in pathogenic variant carriers and non-carriers were also compared. BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants were detected in twenty patients, thus, a total of 503 n…

Frequency of a positive family history of colorectal cancer in general practice: a cross-sectional study.

2016

BACKGROUND Evidence on the frequency of a positive family history of colorectal cancer (CRC) among individuals aged <55 years is lacking. General practice setting might be well suited for the identification of individuals in this above-average risk group. OBJECTIVE To determine the frequency of a reported positive family history of CRC among patients aged 40 to 54 years in a general practice setting. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in 21 general practices in Germany. Patients aged 40 to 54 years were identified by means of the practice software and interviewed by health care assistants using a standardized four-item questionnaire. Outcome was occurrence of a positive family his…

Estrogen-metabolizing gene polymorphisms in the assessment of breast carcinoma risk and fibroadenoma risk in Caucasian women.

2004

BACKGROUND Genes encoding enzymes involved in estrogen metabolism are held to be candidate genes for associations with breast disease. In these candidate genes, no critical combination of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for assessing breast carcinoma risk has been reported to date. METHODS In a large case–control study, the authors investigated 10 estrogen-metabolizing SNPs in 396 patients with breast carcinoma, 154 patients with fibroadenoma, and 1936 healthy control patients without breast carcinoma in their personal history. The following 10 SNPs were analyzed using sequencing-on-chip technology via a solid-phase polymerase chain reaction assay performed on oligonucleotide microar…

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor : case series of 14 with wide range of clinical presentation

2017

Background To present 14 cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), highlighting their clinical, radiographic, and histologic characteristics. Material and Methods Fourteen cases of AOT were retrieved from the archives of the Oral Pathology Biopsy Service (OPBS). Clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings are described. Results Fourteen AOT cases were reviewed, of which 12 were intraosseous and two were peripheral (gingiva). The cases came from eight females and six males with an age range of 11-30. Of the 12 intraosseous cases, nine were follicular (associated with impacted teeth), while three were extra-follicular (present between teeth). Six of the 12 cases were in the maxilla, and…

The role of combined techniques of scintigraphy and SPECT/CT in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism

2019

RATIONALE Primary hyperparathyroidism, usually as a result of a hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland, represents more than 90% cases of patients evaluated for hypercalcemia. Combined techniques of preoperative scintigraphy and SPECT/CT serve as a successful minimally-invasive parathyroidectomy. This recent imaging method provides four-dimensional functional images with advanced contrast resolution which greatly facilitates preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas. PATIENT CONCERNS We presented the case of a male Caucasian patient, aged 67 years, who was investigated for hypercalcemia. Increased levels of parathormone, cervical ultrasonography without pathological changes, and negativ…

Htid-1, the human homolog of the Drosophila melanogaster l(2)tid tumor suppressor, defines a novel physiological role of APC.

2007

Htid-1, the human counterpart of the Drosophila tumor suppressor gene lethal(2)tumorous imaginal discs (l(2)tid) encodes three splice forms translated into three cytosolic - Tid50, Tid48 and Tid46 - and three mitochondrial - Tid43, Tid40 and Tid38 - proteins. Here we provide evidence for the association of the endogenous Tid50/Tid48 proteins with the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) tumor suppressor in normal colon epithelium, colorectal cancer cells and mouse NIH3T3 fibroblasts. Using the Glutathione S-transferase binding assay we show that the N-terminal region including the Armadillo domain (ARM) of APC is sufficient to bind the Tid molecules. Using immunoprecipitation and confocal micro…
