Myoepithelial cells are the main component in pleomorphic adenomas?

Objective: The aim of this study was to quantify by immunohistochemistry the number of myoepithelial cells (MyECs) in pleomorphic adenomas (PAs). Material and methods: We retrieved the paraffin cubes of 27 PAs, new slides were done and they were stained with anti-S100 protein antibody. The amount of S-100 protein positive cells was quantified, their morphology was recorded and comparison among MyEC number with age, gender and involved gland were also done. Results: With S-100 protein, MyECs in normal salivary gland tissue were seen surrounding the ductual structures only. TP53 and p16INK4A, but not H-KI-Ras, are involved in tumorigenesis and progression of pleomorphic adenomas.

The putative role of TP53 and p16INK4A tumor suppressor genes and Ras oncogenes in the development and progression of salivary gland neoplasias was studied in 28 cases of pleomorphic adenomas (PA), 4 cases of cystic adenocarcinomas, and 1 case of carcinoma ex-PA. Genetic and epigenetic alterations in the above genes were analyzed by Polymerase Chain Reaction/Single Strand Conformational Polymorphism (PCR/SSCP) and sequencing and by Methylation Specific-PCR (MS-PCR). Mutations in TP53 were found in 14% (4/28) of PAs and in 60% (3/5) of carcinomas. Mutations in H-Ras and K-Ras were identified in4%(1/28) and7% (2/28) of PAs, respectively. Dietary fatty acids and recurrence of colorectal adenomas in a European intervention trial.

Epidemiological studies have provided inconsistent data about the role of dietary fatty acids in colorectal cancer, and few studies have addressed their role in colorectal adenoma. The aim of the study was to assess the risk of overall adenoma recurrence associated with dietary consumption of total fat, subtypes of fat, and specific fatty acids (oleic acid, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid). Quantification of the risk of relapses after thyroid loboisthmusectomy for benign thyroid nodules

AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate correlations between pre-operating epidemiological, clinical and diagnostic data and relapses concerning to patients operated on for benign thyroid nodules. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The AA. carried out a new ultrasonographic exam in 155 patients selected at random among 1012 treated by thyroid lobectomy between September 1976 and December 2002; 107 relapses were found (69%). This study aims to evaluate the percentage of cyto-histologic correlation in patients with a thyroid disease documented through clinical-instrumental, cytological (FNAB), histological and surgical examinations. Virtual reality system for planning minimally invasive neurosurgery

Object The authors report on their experience with a 3D virtual reality system for planning minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. Methods Between October 2002 and April 2006, the authors used the Dextroscope (Volume Interactions, Ltd.) to plan neurosurgical procedures in 106 patients, including 100 with intracranial and 6 with spinal lesions. The planning was performed 1 to 3 days preoperatively, and in 12 cases, 3D prints of the planning procedure were taken into the operating room.
