The role of reading difficulties in the associations between task values, efficacy beliefs, and achievement emotions

2018

The aim of this study was to examine the situational associations of reading-related task values and efficacy beliefs with achievement emotions, and whether these associations are moderated by reading difficulties (RD). The sample comprised 128 Finnish sixth-grade students (66 with no reading difficulties [No RD], 31 with mild reading difficulties [Mild RD], and 31 with severe reading difficulties [Severe RD]) who were randomized to complete either a non-challenging or challenging reading task. Students reported their reading-related task values (attainment and interest) and efficacy beliefs right before and their achievement emotions both before and after performing the reading task. The r…

La eficacia de una intervención con aplicación móvil sobre actitudes asociadas a la violencia de pareja en los adolescentes de centros de acogida

2020

ABSTRACT This study focuses on the effectiveness of an app-based, monitored intervention using the Liad@s app in a residential youth-care setting. The aim of this intervention is to reduce maladaptive beliefs and attitudes linked to dating violence: distortions or myths about romantic love and hostile and benevolent dimensions of sexism. A quasi-experimental pre-post study with a control group was carried out. Participants were 71 adolescents from 9 group homes in Valencia (Spain). The outcomes measures were hostile and benevolent sexism (Ambivalent Sexism Inventory - ASI), ambivalence and prejudice towards men (Ambivalence toward Men Inventory - AMI), and myths about romantic love. The res…

The Role of Parental Communication and Emotional Intelligence in Child-to-Parent Violence

2019

In recent years, cases of child-to-parent violence (CPV) have increased significantly, prompting greater scientific interest in clarifying its causes. The aim of this research was to study the relationship between styles of family communication (open, offensive and avoidant), emotional intelligence or EI (attention, repair and perceived emotional clarity) and CPV, taking into account the gender of the aggressors. The participants of the study were 1200 adolescents (46.86% boys) between the ages of 12 and 18 enrolled at secondary schools in the Autonomous Communities of Andalusia and Valencia (M = 13.88, SD = 1.32). Design and Validation of the Brief Self Online Scale (SO-8) in Early Adolescence: An Exploratory Study

2020

For the Z-Generation, the Internet has become a very important experimentation laboratory for the discovery and validation of their identity. Despite the importance of the process of building the self in the adolescent, there are hardly any validated instruments that measure the self online. The aim of this research was to design and validate the Brief Self Online Scale (SO-8). A total of 843 students (384 boys, 45.6%), with an age range of 10 to 14 years participated. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the hypothesized model of two correlated factors (Online Self-Perception and Online Idealized Projection), previously obtained through exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The relia…

Parental and Familial Factors Influencing Physical Activity Levels in Early Adolescence: A Prospective Study

2020

Parental/familial factors are important determinants of the physical activity level (PAL) in children and adolescents, but studies rarely prospectively evaluate their relationships. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in physical activity levels among adolescents from Bosnia and Herzegovina over a two-year period and to determine parental/familial predictors of PAL in early adolescence. A total of 651 participants (50.3% females) were tested at baseline (beginning of high school education

Cumulative risks for health of adolescent girls and boys: Disconnection from both family and school contexts

2008

International audience; In this presentation, concerning adolescents’ health, we want to show the interest to consider both gender and quality of contextual transactions. For this, the presented study aims at examining the links between contextual disconnections, from family and school, and the health of girls and boys, according to the extent and scope of the contextual disconnection and the health outcomes under consideration. Middle school adolescents – 521 girls and 466 boys – participated in this research. Three health measures were used: externalized disorders, internalized disorders, and consumptions. Four groups were constituted: No disconnection, Family or School disconnection (sin…

Bio-ecological approach applied to adolescents’ health: Girls and boys in situations of contextual disconnection

2011

International audience; In this study, we base on Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model and propose to examine health behaviours of adolescents – girls and boys – in light of the Person-Context transactions. More precisely, we consider as a special issue the relations between health and degraded contextual Person-Family and/or Person-School transactions. One thousand and six French middle-school (8th grade) adolescents, 479 boys and 527 girls, took part in this study. They were categorized into four groups: Family disconnected adolescents, School disconnected adolescents, Double disconnected adolescents (that is, adolescents who are disconnected to both contexts), and Not disconnected adoles…

2006

The major dimension of this article is to point out the importance of psychological follow-up with sporting teenagers. Emma's example illustrates the inherent transitions from this period of age in the specific context of the high level sport. For Emma, the passage of hurdle becomes the metaphor of its psychical conflict. The counter performance which appears in the passage of hurdle announces its ambivalence with regard to its personal history within realities of sport cultures. This making sense of the sporting problems within the framework of the psychological follow-up can help to exceed this difficulty of passage and to support its engagement like subject of its own desire on the way o…
