In vivo manipulation of Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells with zoledronate and low-dose interleukin-2 for immunotherapy of advanced breast cancer patients.

2010

The potent anti-tumour activities of gamma delta T cells have prompted the development of protocols in which gamma delta-agonists are administered to cancer patients. Encouraging results from small Phase I trials have fuelled efforts to characterize more clearly the application of this approach to unmet clinical needs such as metastatic carcinoma. To examine this approach in breast cancer, a Phase I trial was conducted in which zoledronate, a V gamma 9V delta 2 T cell agonist, plus low-dose interleukin (IL)-2 were administered to 10 therapeutically terminal, advanced metastatic breast cancer patients. Treatment was well tolerated and promoted the effector maturation of V gamma 9V delta 2 T …

Advanced Virgo Status

2015

Abstract The detection of a gravitational wave signal in September 2015 by LIGO interferometers, announced jointly by LIGO collaboration and Virgo collaboration in February 2016, opened a new era in Astrophysics and brought to the whole community a new way to look at - or “listen” to - the Universe. In this regard, the next big step was the joint observation with at least three detectors at the same time. This configuration provides a twofold benefit: it increases the signal-to-noise ratio of the events by means of triple coincidence and allows a narrower pinpointing of GW sources, and, in turn, the search for Electromagnetic counterparts to GW signals. Advanced Virgo (AdV) is the second ge…

Perioperative morbidity and rate of upstaging after laparoscopic staging for patients with locally advanced cervical cancer: results of a prospective…

2015

Objective The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging for cervical cancer is based on clinical examination. Previous studies have demonstrated significant upstaging with surgical staging. However, no randomized trial has ever shown a survival benefit when radiation combined with chemoradiation (RCTX) is modified according to surgical staging. The objective of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of surgical staging prior to radical RCTX treatment among patients with locally advanced cervical cancer in the setting of a larger, prospective, randomized study (the Uterus-11 study of the German Gynecologic Oncology Group). Study Design Between 2009 …

Near infrared spectroscopic study on the adsorption of methanol on silica gel

2013

Author's version of an article in the journal: Advanced Materials Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.4028/www.scientific.net/AMR.650.150 The silanol groups on Silica gel surface are sites for adsorption of polar molecules. Alcohols and other polar molecules are easily adsorbed by forming hydrogen bondings with OH groups on silica gel surface. A study on the adsorption of methanol on silica gel was carried out by using NIR spectroscopy in combination with ssecond derivative techniques. Four of the well characterised silica gel samples were used in this study. Each of the silica gel (0.25g) samples with different surface areas and silanol number was pressed i…

The Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit: a consolidated design for the system requirement review of the preliminary definition phase

2023

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (i…

GW170814: A Three-Detector Observation of Gravitational Waves from a Binary Black Hole Coalescence

2017

On August 14, 2017 at 10 30:43 UTC, the Advanced Virgo detector and the two Advanced LIGO detectors coherently observed a transient gravitational-wave signal produced by the coalescence of two stellar mass black holes, with a false-alarm rate of 1 in 27 000 years. The signal was observed with a three-detector network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 18. The inferred masses of the initial black holes are 30.5-3.0+5.7M and 25.3-4.2+2.8M (at the 90% credible level). The luminosity distance of the source is 540-210+130 Mpc, corresponding to a redshift of z=0.11-0.04+0.03. A network of three detectors improves the sky localization of the source, reducing the area of the 90% credible regio…

Application of a simple algorithm to estimate daily evapotranspiration from NOAA–AVHRR images for the Iberian Peninsula

2007

International audience; Evapotranspiration (ET) is a key process in land surface–atmosphere studies. It mainly depends on water availability and incoming solar radiation and then reflects the interactions between surface water processes and climate. In this paper, a methodology for retrieving ET from low spatial resolution remote sensing data is presented. It is based on the evaporative fraction concept, and it has been applied to Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AHVRR) data acquired over the Iberian Peninsula. The methodology does not require other data than the data provided by the satellite and may be applied to areas with almost spatially constant atmospheric conditions and whi…

Leveraging the benefits of big data with fast data for effective and efficient cybersecurity analytics systems : A robust optimisation approach

2020

In recent times, major cybersecurity breaches and cyber fraud within the public and private sectors are making international headlines. Majority of organisations are facing cybersecurity adversity and advanced threats. On the one hand, we have asynchronous cybersecurity practices, many standards and frameworks to consider while on the other hand, we have to deal and secure our organisations against cyber-criminals, organised hacktivists, insider threats, hackers and nation-states with malafide intentions. The Center for Cyber Safety and Education's Global Information Security Workforce Study (GISWS) confirms that globally we are not only loosing but also backpedalling against threats and ri…
