This paper is designed to develop a procedure which defines a planning criterion for railway superstructure maintenance by means of Markov decision processes. This methodology allows to formulate a specific policy π which carries out the best configuration of budget allocation (min. Calibration of Speed-Density Relationships for Freeways in Aimsun

The first application of a calibration methodology which uses speed-density relationships in the microsimulation calibration process is described in this article. Traffic patterns were implemented developing speed-density relationships for empirical and simulated data. For empirical relationships reference was made to traffic data observed at A22 Freeway (Italy). Aimsun microscopic traffic simulator software was then used to obtain analogous relationships for a test freeway segment under uncongested traffic conditions. Introduction of Autonomous Vehicles in road traffic will remove the impact of the human factor from the driver’s decision-making process, and will transform the criteria for road network design, road infrastructure administration, traffic modeling and assessment tools for road safety management.
