Road Functional Classification Using Pattern Recognition Techniques
2019
The existing international standards suggest a methodology to assign a specific functional class to a road, by the values of some features, both geometrical and use-related. Sometimes, these characteristics are in contrast with each other and direct the analyst towards conflicting classes for a road or, worse, one or more of these features vary heterogeneously along the road. In these conditions, the analyst assigns the class that, by his capability and experience, he retains the most appropriate, in a very subjective way. On the contrary, the definition of an automatic procedure assuring an objective identification of the most appropriate functional class for each road would be desirable. …
THE DESIGN OF WAITING AREAS TO OPTIMIZE THE STORAGE CAPACITY IN THE MARINE INTERMODAL TERMINALS
2009
The appropriate sizing of storage areas to optimize the management of intermodal transport, the adoption of environment protection systems and the appropriate flow’s regulations inside manoeuvre’s zones can solve many problems encountered today in a intermodal marine terminal. For these reasons the “integrated design” of storage areas for vehicles and containers is considered essential to ensure efficiency and functionality for all harbour-system. So is here proposed a simulative model as a tool for a more correct design of waiting areas by considering the real stochastic conditions of the process of the arrivals. For the sizing of areas for containers in the harbours, it is necessary to re…
Improvement of high modulus asphalt mixtures with average quality aggregate and bitumen by application of polymeric additives
2018
Abstract The paper deals with the development of asphalt mixtures for high performing binder and base courses, modified with both commercial and waste polymeric additives, via dry process. The focus was on the mix design of high performing mixtures making use of average quality aggregate and average penetration grade bitumen (as locally available) instead of the usually required high quality components, manly very hard bitumen, thus aiming to improve the reference mixture as made possible by suitable polymers. Mixtures were subjected not only to conventional tests for mix design purposes, but also to advanced tests for performance evaluation such as rutting resistance and fatigue resistance…
Prediction of hydraulic and acoustic properties of open-graded mixes
2014
The use of open-graded mixes increases significantly the hydraulic permeability of pavement and contributes to reduce the noise impact in comparison to traditional pavement. Such characteristics are very appealing and would greatly increase driver's safety. However, during service life, the pores tend to be clogged by many factors among them secondary traffic compaction and filling of voids by fine materials are relevant, especially on heavy routes. In this case the noise reduction and drainage capabilities will gradually disappear, causing serious problems for road safety and maintenance. In this paper we propose a simulation approach in order to predict the drainage and acoustic behavior …
Estimation of pollutant emissions from road traffic by image processing techniques. A case study in a suburban area
2013
This paper suggests a methodology based on the image processing technique able to automatically calculate the vehicle traffic and its components (light vehicles, heavy vehicles and motorcycles). The method also allows to evaluate instant vehicle speeds and, where necessary, to rebuild vehicle trajectories. Traffic data obtained through the procedure described below (capacities and speeds) can be also usefully applied to estimate pollutant emissions from vehicle traffic per year; therefore, the suggested method employs the algorithms defined with CORINAIR procedures, implemented in Copert 4 software. In order to evaluate how effective is the methodology, an experiment has been carried out in…
Super-Resolution Images Methodology Applied to UAV Datasets to Road Pavement Monitoring
2022
The increasingly widespread use of smartphones as real cameras on drones has allowed an ever-greater development of several algorithms to improve the image’s refinement. Although the latest generations of drone cameras let the user achieve high resolution images, the large number of pixels to be processed and the acquisitions from multiple lengths for stereo-view often fail to guarantee satisfactory results. In particular, high flight altitudes strongly impact the accuracy, and result in images which are undefined or blurry. This is not acceptable in the field of road pavement monitoring. In that case, the conventional algorithms used for the image resolution conversion, such as the bilinea…

CARATTERIZZAZIONE GEOTECNICA DI UN’ARGILLA DI ALTA PLASTICITAꞌ TRATTATA CON CALCE
2013
Modeling of the viscoelastic behavior of paving bitumen using fractional derivatives
2009
The paving grade bitumen used in the production of asphalt mixtures for road construction is significantly able to affect the in-service performances of flexible road pavements. It has been proved that, when subjected to loading conditions comparable with most pavement operating conditions, bituminous binders behave as linear visco-elastic materials. The aim of this paper is to propose a model based on fractional differential equations which is able to describe the behavior of bituminous binders in the linear viscoelastic range. Shear creep testing and creep recovery testing were carried out over a range of temperatures and by applying a stress level which makes it possible to maintain the …
