Aesthetics and “transcultural” turn
2015
What does “trancultural turn” exactly means and which is its relationship with aesthetics? Culture has never been as important as it is today, so it is now more than ever crucial to reflect on its current expressions and transformations. In this sense it is useful to examine the perspective of cultural studies. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of the “cultural turn” on aesthetics highlighting positive and negative aspects of the relationship between aesthetics and cultural studies. In spite of many criticisms it has received (eclecticism, lack of scientific rigor, methodological unreliability and so on…), it is crucial to accept the challenge coming from cultural studies …
Understanding Design Aesthetics beyond Functional Beauty Accounts
2019
Abstract:
Design is presented as an apt object of aesthetic appreciation. The nature of its aesthetic dimension will be developed in terms of the relationship between form and function. Specially, by looking at the role that knowledge about function plays in our design aesthetic judgements. Then, I will present the dominant view about the aesthetic value of design coming from functional beauty accounts. Finally, in the last section, I will focus upon some problems derived from the aforementioned integral model form-function in design aesthetics. By means of practical cases, I will point to the narrowness of functional beauty accounts and its inability to include a broader range of act…

¿Metrópolis dispersas?
2010
The Visual Quality of Urban Park Scenes of Kowloon Park, Hong Kong: Likeability, Affective Appraisal, and Cross-Cultural Perspectives
2005
The urban park is a place where urbanites can escape from the stresses of everyday life. Using a set of fifteen photographs as visual stimuli, we attempted to identify those scenes that are liked by visitors to Kowloon Park, Hong Kong. The visual quality of an urban park scene is measured by its likeability, referring to the probability that the scene will evoke a strong and positive response among the users of the park. Because Hong Kong is an international metropolis, the respondent sample included both Hong Kong residents and tourists. The principal component analysis revealed the three underlying ‘dimensions’ of the appraisal aspects of the data: the ‘affective’ component, the ‘managem…
Wartość poznawcza sztuki filmowej. Implikacje Stanisława Lema filozofii literatury
2018
The cognitive value of film art. The implications of Stanisław Lem’s philosophy of literatureSince the mid-twentieth century, audiovisuality has taken over the means of communication. Progress in technology has contributed to the dynamic development of media such as film and television. Today we can safely admit that life is under the pressure of audiovisual media. The film is an element of common experience, part of everyday life. The question is whether it is also cognitively valuable? Can a movie be a model that helps you to know yourself, your place in the world, relationships with others? And if so, how much can you trust such knowledge? The aim of this article is to reflect on the cog…
Innovation in lighting for enhancing the appreciation and preservation of archaeological heritage
2014
Abstract The cultural content of ancient sites highlights the importance of light, which is an essential tool for the correct appreciation of the historical value and memory of cultural heritage. This should be a new way to highlight significance of fragments in compliance of the surrounding, which has not the same characteristics, to signal a visual path, creating itineraries that involve the context. Light plays a very important role in creating emotion, suggestion, evocation and supporting the visitor experience. Innovative technological solutions should be designed taking into account the kind of landscape and morphological characteristics of the site. This paper presents the study of a…
The origins of the aesthetic enjoyment of music - A review of the literature
2009
Listeners attribute a positive or negative value to music. This aesthetic experience is known to be observable over the individuals’ entire life span, from early childhood to old age, and in every culture. It is then often concluded that such an aesthetic experience constitutes part of the human nature, having an important biological foundation. This assumption leads to the question of how aesthetic experience of music originated in the biological evolution. In this paper, we will explore this question in the light of evolutionary psychology, cognitive science, and systems neuroscience. After reviewing the existing proposals, we conclude that the explanation of the origin of aesthetic expe…
Balenciaga, the Master of Haute Couture
2020
This chapter deals with Balenciaga, a brand that carries the name of the designer known as “The Master of Haute Couture”, one of the most revered and influential fashion designers of the twentieth century. Characterized by sculptural quality, deft manipulation of textiles, and dramatic use of color and texture, Balenciaga creations are inspired by works of art and become works of art themselves through overlapping forms and genres. In this way, artification turns an elitist–but still commercial product—into a hybrid that acquires aesthetic and symbolic value and restores that aura lost due to production logics. Following this perspective, the main contribution of the chapter is to highlight…
