A D-mannose-specific lectin from Gerardia savaglia that inhibits nucleocytoplasmic transport of mRNA.

A new lectin has been isolated from the coral Gerardia savaglia by affinity chromatography, using locust gum as an absorbent, and D-mannose as eluant. Final purification was achieved by Bio-Gel P300 gel filtration. The agglutinin is a protein composed of two polypeptide chains with a Mr of 14800; the two subunits are not linked by disulfide bond(s). The isoelectric point is 4.8, the amino acid composition is rich in the acidic amino acids aspartic acid and glutamic acid. The absorption maximum for the protein was at 276 nm; with a molar absorption coefficient of 1.27 X 10(5) M-1 cm-1. Lipase maturation factor 1 is required for endothelial lipase activity

Lipase maturation factor 1 (Lmf1) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane protein involved in the posttranslational folding and/or assembly of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) into active enzymes. Mutations in Lmf1 are associated with diminished LPL and HL activities ("combined lipase deficiency") and result in severe hypertriglyceridemia in mice as well as in human subjects. Here, we investigate whether endothelial lipase (EL) also requires Lmf1 to attain enzymatic activity. Fractal surfaces from simple arithmetic operations

Fractal surfaces ('patchwork quilts') are shown to arise under most general circumstances involving simple bitwise operations between real numbers. A theory is presented for all deterministic bitwise operations on a finite alphabet. It is shown that these models give rise to a roughness exponent $H$ that shapes the resulting spatial patterns, larger values of the exponent leading to coarser surfaces.

The problem of clustering, or unsupervised classification, has been solved by a myriad of techniques, all of which depend, either directly or implicitly, on the Bayesian principle of optimal classification. To be more specific, within a Bayesian paradigm, if one is to compare the testing sample with only a single point in the feature space from each class, the optimal Bayesian strategy would be to achieve this based on the distance from the corresponding means or central points in the respective distributions. TTAS a New Stilbene Derivative that Induces Apoptosis in Leishmania Infantum

Leishmania parasites are able to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), similarly to mammalian cells. Recently it was demonstrated in vitro the anti-leishmanial effect of some natural and synthetic stilbenoids including resveratrol and piceatannol. In this study we evaluated the Leishmanicidal activity of a pool of stilbene derivatives which had previously shown high apoptotic efficacy against neoplastic cells. All the compounds tested were capable to decrease the parasite viability in a dose-dependent manner. Trans-stilbenes proved to be markedly more effective than cis-isomers. C7(P32) and C6(P34) PR proteins induced in tomato leaves by citrus exocortis viroid infection are chitinases

[EN] Two chitinases induced in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Rutgers) by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) infection were purified. Their molecular masses determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-gel electrophoresis were 32 kDa and 34 kDa and by filtration through Sephadex G-100 were 23 kDa and 25 kDa, respectively. These chitinases (P32 and P34) have been shown to be identical to the tomato pathogenesis-related proteins C7 and C6. Abstract The aim of this study was to develop an analytical strategy for the structural analysis of glycoprotein N-glycans by combining several sensitive methods without any elaborate equipment. The soluble human interleukin-6 receptor (shIL6R) was purified from human plasma. In a single immunoaffinity purification step a 140000-fold enrichment with a yield of 95% was achieved. A subsequent IL-6 affinity chromatography resulted in a homogeneous receptor preparation but only in a yield of less than 5%. The biological activity of the soluble receptor was clearly demonstrated by its ability to induce the synthesis of the acute-phase protein α1-antichymotrypsin in HepG2 cells stably transfected with IL-6. Commercial uses of bioactive peptides require low cost, effective methods for their production. We developed a new carrier protein for high yield production of recombinant peptides in Escherichia coli very well suited for the production of toxic peptides like antimicrobial peptides. The human Usher syndrome (USH) is the most common form of combined hereditary deaf-blindness. Three clinical subtypes (USH1-3) are differentiated based on severity, age of onset and progression of the symptoms. Mutations in the GPR98 gene encoding the USH2C protein Vlgr1b or GPR98 cause USH2, the most common form of USH. The G-protein coupled receptor Vlgr1b was previously identified as a component of the periciliary USH protein network, crucial for ciliary cargo transport in photoreceptors.
