For women in particular, the rate of these diseases accelerates at middle age; therefore it is important to identify the determinants of health-enhancing physical activity during midlife in this population. In this study, we focused on determinants that are unique to the female sex, such as childbearing and menopause. Abstract Background To examine longitudinal changes in physical performance during the menopausal transition and the role of physical activity (PA) in these changes. Methods Based on follicle-stimulating hormone levels and bleeding diaries, women (47–55 years) were classified as early (n = 89) and late perimenopausal (n = 143) and followed prospectively until postmenopausal status, with mean duration of 17.5 and 13.8 months, respectively. The story of a prisoner inside an enormous steel mountain is embedded in Kullervo, an early Finnish tragedy by 19th-century author Aleksis Kivi. I focus here on the exceptional size of the mountain, as told by the main character, Kullervo. Although the embedded story has aroused admiration in research, the mountain’s size and form do not appear to have done so. If taken literally, and assuming the shape of a double pyramid, at a minimum, the mountain’s surface area would be between that of Earth and Uranus, a planet that Kivi was somehow aware of. Rapid and reliable methods of hMPV detection in clinical samples are essential to implement appropriate care, to better understand the pathology of hMPV and to determine its epidemiology. Respiratory samples from 1,386 patients collected during 2 consecutive years were screened for hMPV using indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) assay with a monoclonal antibody.
