Modéliser la ville

2011

2013

Characterized by a similar size and radial structure, high-speed rail French and Spanish networks are designed to meet long distance accessibility needs of major metropolitan systems. However, the two systems serve a number of towns with less than 100,000 inhabitants, which understand this opportunity as means to improve their attractiveness. The comparison of the two networks, which systems obey to different operating principles, allows specifying the role played by the high speed in the precise situation of these small towns. Moreover, this comparison allows analyzing interactions between accessibility gains and development strategies that have been implemented. Beyond their diversity, th…

1997

The fractal approach. A new tool for the spatial analysis of urban agglomerations. Fractal geometry is a new approach for the study of spatial distributions. The basic model is a law of hierarchical distribution corresponding to Pareto's law which is familiar to urban geographers and demographers. The methods of fractal analysis can be used to study the spatial organization of human activities across scales. The regularities and the discontinuities in the distributions can then be identified. These discontinuities can be spatially situated. Applying this concept to urbanized areas has shown that districts can be defined and classified according to their scaling relations, thereby allowing d…

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects (e.g. pedestrian-friendly environments, well-balanced public and private transport modes, efficient street networks, land use, movement economy; access for all to jobs, retail, services; healthcare, culture and leisure). In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the rela…
