BSA Aggregation in Trehalose-Water Systems
2010
Introduction Recent studies [1] on ternary protein-trehalose-water samples have shown that the protein thermal denaturation temperature is linearly correlated with the glass transition temperature of the system, despite the quite large temperature difference between the two processes. In such studies it is stated that the collective, long range properties of the matrix that regulate the glass transition are strictly correlated with local features on which the denaturation of the protein depends. In order to ascertain whether an analogous correlation exists between the effects of trehalose on the protein’s aggregation process and the glass transition temperature of the system, we performed L…

THE ROLE OF HSP60 IN AMYLOID BETA PATHWAY: RELEVANCE TO ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder affecting more than 40 million individuals worldwide. The high number of factors triggering the onset of AD justifies the current absence of disease-modifying therapies. The involved pathological mechanisms are still elusive and, therefore, the finding of effective therapies requires further elucidation of biomolecular mechanisms controlling AD pathogenesis. Particularly, the aberrant amyloidogenic cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP), amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide misfolding and oligomerization, and the impairment of the protein quality control machinery are key hallmarks characterizing the onset of the disease. Furthe…

DEMAND Project: A Proposal for a Bottom-Up Aggregation Platform
2019
In many countries, a great number of electricity market operators have developed Demand Response (DR) programs with different purposes. In this framework, load aggregation represents an important issue, linked to the potential that the coordinated management of distributed resources has on affecting power systems' operation.

e-Fair: Aggregation in e-Commerce for Exploiting Economies of Scale
2017
In recent years, many new and interesting models of successful online business have been developed, including competitive models such as auctions, where the product price tends to rise, and group-buying, where users cooperate obtaining a dynamic price that tends to go down. We propose the e-fair as a business model for social commerce, where both sellers and buyers are grouped to maximize benefits. e-Fairs extend the group-buying model aggregating demand and supply for price optimization as well as consolidating shipments and optimize withdrawals for guaranteeing additional savings. e-Fairs work upon multiple dimensions: time to aggregate buyers, their geographical distribution, price/quant…
Robust and Efficient Data Gathering for Wireless Sensor Networks
2006
This paper describes a new strategy for data gathering in wireless sensor networks that takes into account the need for both energy saving, typical of such networks, and for a reasonable tradeoff between robustness and efficiency. The proposed algorithm implements an efficient strategy for retransmission of lost packets by discovering alternative routes and making clever use of multiple paths when necessary; in order to do that we build upon the general framework presented in recent works, that provided a formulation of duplicate and order insensitive aggregation functions, and by taking advantage of some intrinsic characteristics of the wireless sensor networks, we exploit implicit acknowl…

Information Organization and Visualization for the ALS Project
2010
This work presents the adopted methodology and the realized tools for data visualization in the Linguistic Atlas Of Sicily (ALS) Project. The ALS Project has the purpose to discovery new trends and variables to track the linguistic evolution over time and space in Sicily. The project is focused on how linguistic variables are related to social and economic aspects of the evolution of population and vice-versa. The visualization tools are a relevant aspect of the project to support decisions and disseminate results. One of the major factors is the geographic dependence of data evolution. To this aim complex set of tools has been developed: some tools are stand-alone while others are collabor…
