Characterization of three-dimensional microstructure of composite materials by X-ray tomography

Analysis methods for X-ray microtomographic images of short fibre composite materials were developed. The methods enable estimation of microstructural properties of the material, e.g., aspect ratio and orientation of fibres. Being based on X-ray microtomography and image analysis, the methods are nondestructive and do not require user intervention. In particular, a method for determination of the aspect ratio of fibres was first developed. The method contains an assumption about similarity of the shape of the fibres. The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. Radiation-sensitive gels are among the most recent and promising developments for radiation therapy (RT) dosimetry. RT dosimetry has the twofold goal of ensuring the quality of the treatment and the radiation protection of the patient. Benchmark dosimetry for acceptance testing and commissioning of RT systems is still based on ionization chambers. However, even the smallest chambers cannot resolve the steep dose gradients of up to 30–50% per mm generated with the most advanced techniques. Tutkimuksella selvitimme, parantaako voimaharjoittelu iäkkäiden toimintakykyä, ja onko harjoitusmäärillä vaikutusta toimintakyvyn muutoksiin. Tutkimukseen osallistui 106 koehenkilöä (65–75 v.), jotka satunnaistettiin neljään ryhmään: 1x/vko (H1, n=26), 2x/vko (H2, n=27) ja 3x/vko (H3, n=28) harjoitteleviin ja kontrolliryhmään (K, n=25). Ensimmäisen kolmen kuukauden ajan kaikki harjoitteluryhmät voimaharjoittelivat valvotusti kahdesti viikossa (H, n=81), jonka jälkeen ryhmät harjoittelivat kuusi kuukautta (3 kk–9 kk) nimensä mukaisesti kerran, kahdesti tai kolmesti viikossa. "On-the-go" multispectral imaging system embedded on a track laying tractor to characterize the vine foliage

Mutispectral imaging systems are widely used in remote sensing for Precision Viticulture. In this work, this technique was applied in the proximal sensing context to characterize vine foliage. A mobile terrestrial experimental system is presented, composed of a GPS receiver, a multi-spectral camera acquiring visible and near infrared images, and a Greenseeker RT-100 which measures the Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI). This optical system observes vine foliage in the trellis plan, in natural sunlight. The experimental field is planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier cultivars in a latin squared pattern.
