Music Therapy for Depression Enhanced With Listening Homework and Slow Paced Breathing: A Randomised Controlled Trial
2021
Introduction: There is evidence from earlier trials for the efficacy of music therapy in the treatment of depression among working-age people. Starting therapy sessions with relaxation and revisiting therapeutic themes outside therapy have been deemed promising for outcome enhancement. However, previous music therapy trials have not investigated this issue. Objective: To investigate the efficacy of two enhancers, resonance frequency breathing (RFB) and listening homework (LH), when combined with an established music therapy model (trial registration number ISRCTN11618310).Methods: In a 2 × 2 factorial randomised controlled trial, working-age individuals with depression were allocated into gr…
"Mielimatka on ollut mieluisa matka": Yhdistelmäkuntoutus vs. perinteinen Silmu-kuntoutus mielenterveysongelmiin ja asiakkaiden kokemukset yhdistelmä…
2019
Hankkeen tavoitteena oli tutkia verkkopohjaisen, hyväksymis- ja omistautumisterapiamenetelmiin perustuvan yhdistelmämallin eli verkko-ohjelmasta ja kolmesta ryhmämuotoisesta kuntoutusjaksosta koostuvan kuntoutuksen vaikuttavuutta asiakkaiden mielenterveysoireiluun verrattuna Kelan Silmu-mielenterveyskuntoutukseen. Asiakkaat rekrytoitiin lehti-ilmoituksilla kesällä 2017. Tutkimus toteutettiin vuosien 2017–2019 aikana satunnaistetussa kontrolloidussa asetelmassa vertaamalla yhdistelmäkuntoutusryhmää (n = 32) ja perinteistä Silmu-kuntoutusryhmää (n = 27). Yhdistelmäkuntoutusryhmä sai 12 kuukauden kuntoutuksen, johon sisältyi 3 x 2 päivän lähijaksot Peurunka oy:n kuntoutuspalveluissa sekä verkk…
Affect regulation, mental health disorders, and maladaptive brain responses in music listening : a correlational study
2014
Affect regulation may be defined as a process by which an individual maintains or modifies his or her mood or emotional state, by conscious or automatic processes. Adequate affect regulation may play an important role in mitigating or preventing mental illness, which is a widespread, inadequately treated and inadequately understood phenomenon. Music, which is known to express and induce emotions, may be used for affect regulation in a variety of ways, both self-directed and in therapeutic contexts. The effectiveness, however, of different uses of music in affect regulation is not yet understood. Both psychological testing and neuro-imaging were used to explore the relationship between indiv…
Psychiatric Problems in Adolescence Mediate the Association Between Childhood Learning Disabilities and Later Well-Being
2021
This follow-up study investigated the associations of childhood learning disabilities (LDs) with adult-age anxiety, depression, and unemployment. Psychosocial problems in childhood and psychiatric diagnoses and lack of education in adolescence were studied as potential mediators, and gender and mother’s education as potential moderators of these associations. Data on childhood clinical neuropsychological assessments and lifelong register data on individuals with childhood LD (n = 430; 301 [70%] males; 20–39 years of age) and matched controls (n = 2,149) were applied. Mediation analyses were performed using structural equation modeling. Childhood LDs exerted a significant, but relatively sma…
Suomessa asuvan ulkomaalaistaustaisen aikuisväestön psyykkinen kuormittuneisuus
2022
Anxiety reduction with music and tempo synchronization on magnetic resonance imaging patients
2017
Anxiety and claustrophobic reactions in MRI examinations cause unintentional movements, and such motion artifacts lead to interpretation problems. Furthermore, requested anesthesia makes the process costly. A total of 60 outpatients were examined in the Diagnostic Centre of Pécs, Hungary, to test whether synchronizing recorded music to the gradient pulsation of the MRI device can improve the sedative effect of the music. The patients were assigned to three groups: a nonmusic (control), an original tempo (random) and a synchronized music (synchronous) group. Results showed a significantly decreased state anxiety level after the MRI examination in the random and synchronous groups as compared…

Enjoyment and anxiety in Finnish physical education : achievement goals and self-determination perspectives
2019
Approach: The sample of the study included 1148 (565 boys and 583 girls, Mage = 11.27, SD = .32) Grade 5 Finnish PE students who completed a battery of questionnaires including motivational climate, basic psychological needs satisfaction, motivational regulations, goal orientations, perceived competence, enjoyment, and anxiety towards PE. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate two proposed motivational sequences. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to predict students’ enjoyment and anxiety in physical education (PE) through the motivational sequences proposed by self-determination and achievement goal theories. Results: SEM demonstrated a good model fit to the data for the…
The relationships among motivational climate, perceived competence, physical performance, and affects during physical education fitness testing lesso…
2021
Despite the prominence of fitness testing in school physical education (PE), there is a sparsity of research examining the antecedents of students’ affective experiences during fitness testing lessons. This study aimed to investigate the associations among task- and ego-involving motivational climates, perceived physical competence, physical performance, enjoyment, and anxiety during two different types of PE fitness testing lessons. Altogether, 645 Finnish students from Grade 5 (50% boys, Mage = 11.2, SD = 0.36) and Grade 8 (47% boys, Mage = 14.2, SD = 0.35) participated in two fitness testing lessons with different content (lesson 1: 20-meter shuttle run test and a test of flexibility; l…
