Introduction: The impact of a history of competitive sports on later smoking behavior and occurrence of chronic pulmonary diseases is poorly known. We investigated how a history of elite level sports predicted later pulmonary disease morbidity and mortality. Keuhkoahtaumatauti (COPD) on yleinen kansansairaus (GOLD 2016), joka aiheuttaa yli 100 miljoonan euron kustannukset vuosittain (Herse ym. 2015). Liikunnallisella kuntoutuksella on vahvempi tieteellinen tutkimusnäyttö keuhkoahtaumataudin hoidossa kuin millään muulla hoitomuodolla (Garvey ym. 2013; McCarthy ym. 2015).
