CAD of complex passive devices composed of arbitrarily shaped waveguides using Nyström and BI-RME methods
2004
In this paper, a novel computer-aided design (CAD) tool of complex passive microwave devices in waveguide technology is proposed. Such a tool is based on a very efficient integral-equation analysis technique that provides a full-wave characterization of discontinuities between arbitrarily shaped waveguides defined by linear, circular, and/or elliptical arcs. For solving the modal analysis of such arbitrary waveguides, a modified version of the well-known boundary integral-resonant-mode expansion (BI-RME) method using the Nyström approach, instead of the traditional Galerkin version of the method of moments, is proposed, thus providing significant savings on computational costs and implement…
La diagnostica delle malattie infettive: Tra metafora del passato e itinerario nel futuro
1993
A global emergency is threatening mankind, awakening dead ghosts and causing alarm about our present and future: it is the apparently irreversible spread of infectious diseases. This critical and worrying situation should be acknowledged and carefully followed by the radiological profession since all of us – teachers, specialists, professionals – have to deal with imaging diagnostic modalities deriving information from a deceitful and camouflageing anatomo-functional substratum. The increasing spread of infectious diseases is due to a wide range of concomitant factors: HIV infection, drug addiction, migration fenomena and the related opportunistic infections combined with poor hygienic, physi…
A Novel Approach of a Low-Cost UWB Microwave Imaging System with High Resolution Based on SAR and a New Fast Reconstruction Algorithm for Early-Stage…
2022
In this article, a new efficient and robust approach—the high-resolution microwave imaging system—for early breast cancer diagnosis is presented. The core concept of the proposed approach is to employ a combination of a newly proposed delay-and-sum (DAS) algorithm and the specific absorption rate (SAR) parameter to provide high image quality of breast tumors, along with fast image processing. The new algorithm enhances the tumor response by altering the parameter referring to the distance between the antenna and the tumor in the conventional DAS matrices. This adjustment entails a much clearer reconstructed image with short processing time. To achieve these aims, a high directional Vivaldi …
Latvijas reģionu un Rīgas tematiskā satura īpatsvars Latvijas Radio raidījumos "Krustpunktā" un "Pēcpusdiena"
2015
Optical rogue-wave-like extreme value fluctuations in fiber Raman amplifiers
2008
International audience; We report experimental observation and characterization of rogue wave-like extreme value statistics arising from pump-signal noise transfer in a fiber Raman amplifier. Specifically, by exploiting Raman amplification with an incoherent pump, the amplified signal is shown to develop a series of temporal intensity spikes whose peak power follows a power-law probability distribution. The results are interpreted using a numerical model of the Raman gain process using coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, and the numerical model predicts results in good agreement with experiment.
School Bullying Through Graphic Vignettes : Developing a New Arts-Based Method to Study a Sensitive Topic
2020
The purpose of this study was to develop a new arts-based measure assessing school bullying and to test it within a pilot study involving 19 schoolchildren (mean age = 15.4; range = 1.00). The researchers designed the new methodological tool (referred to as graphic vignettes) as a set of incomplete comic strips, which participants were asked to complete in a creative way. Researchers then invited participants to engage in follow-up interviews using completed comic strips as individualized interview prompts. The authors detail the design and administration of the graphic vignettes and discuss their efficacy, limitations, and potential applications. The researchers argue that studies on sensi…
Asymmetric Single Point Incremental Forming of Sheet Metal
2005
The use of computers in manufacturing has enabled the development of several new sheet metal forming processes, which are based upon older technologies. This paper describes modifications that have been made to traditional forming methods such as conventional spinning and shear forming, forming processes in which deformation is localized. Recent advances have enabled this localized deformation to be accurately controlled and studied. Current developments have been focused on forming asymmetric parts using CNC technology, without the need for costly dies. Asymmetric Incremental Sheet Forming has the potential to revolutionize sheet metal forming, making it accessible to all levels of manufac…
SPICE model for resistive gas and odour sensors
1999
A generalised PSPICE model of resistive gas/odour sensors is presented. The model simulates the response of both polymeric and metal oxide devices, as well as an integrated resistive heater that is used to set the operating temperature. In both cases there was good agreement between the observed responses and the PSPICE simulated responses to rectangular pulses of gases. The PSPICE model is not only simpler and faster to use than analytical solutions, but also should permit the rapid prototyping of associated drive circuitry.
Translation, Adaption, and Psychometric Testing of the Myanmar Version of the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey for People Living With HIV…
2021
Introduction: Valid and reliable instruments are crucial for measuring perceived social support among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the English version of the 19-item Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) adapted for PLHIV in Myanmar. Methods: Based on a standard cross-cultural procedure, we adapted the MOS-SSS and formed a Myanmar version of the scale (MOS-SSS-M), and then tested its validity and reliability. A sample of 250 eligible PLHIV was collected from a closed Facebook group that included more than 10,000 Myanmars, most of whom were PLHIV.Results: The MOS-SSS-M achieved a Cronbach’s α of 0.82–0.95. Confirmatory…
Maintaining information in Short-Term Memory between 2 and 6 years old of age : temporal forgetting and helping in maintaining the goal
2014
Working memory is an essential component of thought that is highly involved in learning and academic achievement. However, it is rarely studied in preschoolers, mainly because of a lack of suitable paradigms. Therefore, this thesis investigated the functioning of working memory in children between 2 and 6 years. For this purpose, two original paradigms were used. They were designed to be close to game situations which should help young children to focus their attention on the task. Firstly it was shown that the recall performance decreased over time, even in the absence of an interfering task. Children of this age therefore use a passive maintenance, i.e. without spontaneously implementing …
