In recent years commensal microorganisms are not just “passive occupants”, but important element of homeostasis. There are numerous reports documenting the composition and role of the gut, skin or vagina microbiome but the role of commensal organisms living in the lungs is relatively unknown. Pulmonary microbiome impact on the immune response of the host organism and may indicate new therapeutic directions. Lung microbiome, by modulating the expression of innate immunity genes, causes an increase in the concentration of IL-5, IL-10, IFNγ and CCL11, affects the TLR4 dependent response of pulmonary macrophages and modulate the production of antibacterial peptides contained in the mucus. It is…
Dissimilarity Application for Medical Imaging Classification
2005
In the traditional way of learning from examples of objects the classifiers are built in a feature space. However, alternative ways can be found by constructing decision rules on dissimilarity (distance) representations. In such a recognition process a new object is described by its distances to (a subset of) die training samples. The use of the dissimilarities is especially of interest when features are difficult to obtain or when they have a little discriminative power. Purpose of this work is the development of an automatic classification system which could be useful for radiologists in the investigation of breast cancer. The software has been designed in the framework of the MAGIC-5 col…

A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ´ BIHARMONIC BEZIER SURFACES AND BIHARMONIC EXTREMAL SURFACES
2009
AbstractGiven a prescribed boundary of a Bezier surface, we compare the Bezier surfaces generated by two different methods, i.e., the Bezier surface minimising the biharmonic functional and the unique Bezier surface solution of the biharmonic equation with prescribed boundary. Although often the two types of surfaces look visually the same, we show that they are indeed different. In this paper, we provide a theoretical argument showing why the two types of surfaces are not always the same.
Two -methods to generate Bézier surfaces from the boundary
2009
Two methods to generate tensor-product Bezier surface patches from their boundary curves and with tangent conditions along them are presented. The first one is based on the tetraharmonic equation: we show the existence and uniqueness of the solution of @D^4x->=0 with prescribed boundary and adjacent to the boundary control points of a nxn Bezier surface. The second one is based on the nonhomogeneous biharmonic equation @D^2x->=p, where p could be understood as a vectorial load adapted to the C^1-boundary conditions.
Bézier surfaces of minimal area: The Dirichlet approach
2004
The Plateau-Bezier problem consists in finding the Bezier surface with minimal area from among all Bezier surfaces with prescribed border. An approximation to the solution of the Plateau-Bezier problem is obtained by replacing the area functional with the Dirichlet functional. Some comparisons between Dirichlet extremals and Bezier surfaces obtained by the use of masks related with minimal surfaces are studied.
Bēgļu izraidīšanas vai atgriešanas aizlieguma eksteritoriālais raksturs atklātajā jūrā kā starptautiskā paražu tiesību norma
2019
A Fuzzy Logic C-Means Clustering Algorithm to Enhance Microcalcifications Clusters in Digital Mammograms
2011
The detection of microcalcifications is a hard task, since they are quite small and often poorly contrasted against the background of images. The Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems could be very useful for breast cancer control. In this paper, we report a method to enhance microcalcifications cluster in digital mammograms. A Fuzzy Logic clustering algorithm with a set of features is used for clustering microcalcifications. The method described was tested on simulated clusters of microcalcifications, so that the location of the cluster within the breast and the exact number of microcalcifications is known.
Serum pancreatic enzymes in human immunodeficiency virus-infected children - A collaborative study of the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterolo…
1998
Numerous studies have shown pancreatic disease in adult human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, but there are very few reports on pediatric patients. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of increased serum pancreatic enzyme levels and their relationship to clinical manifestations of acute pancreatitis in HIV-infected children.Forty-seven consecutive, symptomatic HIV-infected children (24 male; median age, 7.3 years; range, 1-17 years) and 45 sex- and age-matched controls without gastroenterologic disease were enrolled. In all subjects serum total amylase, pancreatic amylase, and lipase were assayed with commercial kits. The following were recorded: disease progression (CDC …
