Le colpe della cultura pagana: riflessioni sull'Epistola 69b di Giuliano

2002

The article is a reflection starting from the epistle 89b of the emperor Julian, which is presented as an illuminating document for the reconstruction of the values of the Hellenic civilisation, based on a precise paideutic-religious programme, which takes the form of a kind of canon of praiseworthy and/or inadvisable authors

The Changing Pattern of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection in Intravenous Drug Users

1992

A cross-sectional seroepidemiologic study was carried out between 1985 and 1990 in 1,567 heterosexual intravenous drug users who had been seen at the AIDS Regional Reference Center in Palermo, Italy, to evaluate the rate of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) seroprevalence in this group and its long-term trend. Sixty serum samples collected from drug users in 1980 and 1983, before the founding of the Center (1985), were tested as well. Some demographic and behavioral risk factors were studied in a subgroup of intravenous drug users enrolled in 1985, 1987, and 1990 for their possible association with HIV-1. These factors were also studied in relation to hepatitis B virus infection, …

A non-valvular infective endocarditis in an HIV patient with myocardiopathy

2006

A 37-year-old woman presented in the emergency department revealing a history of HIV infection and C virus hepatitis diagnosed 15 years ago, acquired after a period of intravenous drug abusing. The patient was receiving triple antiHIV therapy and was in an A1 stage (last lymphocite recount of CD4: 0.63 10/l and no AIDS disease manifestation to the present moment). She described episodes, starting 20 days before, of torathic pain coexisting with shivers. There were no symptoms or signs of any focal infection. In the physical examination the only findings were a temperature of 38.4 8C, a 4 cm hepatomegaly and lipodystrophy. We found in the electrocardiogram a sinus rhythm, 96 bpm and no ST se…

The Myth of Io and Female Cyborgic Identity

2020

The figure of Io, the priestess of Hera seducted by Zeus and turned into a cow that wanders from Argo to Egypt pursued by a gadfly, shares in Hera’s bovine imagery and can be considered as a mythical paradigm of the unavoidable ‘yoke’ of love and marriage for women. She actually takes back a fully human aspect by means of conceiving and bearing Epaphus, a son with a name that tells his exceptional conception and divine birth. In the light of readings of some core studies concerning the theory of the cyborg, this paper aims at showing that the girl-heifer – sometimes also represented as a girl-bull, a possible link with Dionysus as hypostasis of sexual potency and fertility – does not only u…

Third-order accurate monotone cubic Hermite interpolants

2019

Abstract Monotonicity-preserving interpolants are used in several applications as engineering or computer aided design. In last years some new techniques have been developed. In particular, in Arandiga (2013) some new methods to design monotone cubic Hermite interpolants for uniform and non-uniform grids are presented and analyzed. They consist on calculating the derivative values introducing the weighted harmonic mean and a non-linear variation. With these changes, the methods obtained are third-order accurate, except in extreme situations. In this paper, a new general mean is used and a third-order interpolant for all cases is gained. We perform several experiments comparing the known tec…

Computer-aided detection of cerebral microbleeds in susceptibility-weighted imaging.

2014

Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is recognized as the preferred MRI technique for visualizing cerebral vasculature and related pathologies such as cerebral microbleeds (CMBs). Manual identification of CMBs is time-consuming, has limited reliability and reproducibility, and is prone to misinterpretation. In this paper, a novel computer-aided microbleed detection technique based on machine learning is presented: First, spherical-like objects (potential CMB candidates) with their corresponding bounding boxes were detected using a novel multi-scale Laplacian of Gaussian technique. A set of robust 3-dimensional Radon- and Hessian-based shape descriptors within each bounding box were then ex…

Interactive simulation of one-dimensional flexible parts

2006

Computer simulations play an ever growing role for the development of automotive products. Assembly simulation, as well as many other processes, are used systematically even before the first physical prototype of a vehicle is built in order to check whether particular components can be assembled easily or whether another part is in the way. Usually, this kind of simulation is limited to rigid bodies. However, a vehicle contains a multitude of flexible parts of various types: cables, hoses, carpets, seat surfaces, insulations, weatherstrips... Since most of the problems using these simulations concern one-dimensional components and since an intuitive tool for cable routing is still needed, w…

Planck scale physics and topology change through an exactly solvable model

2014

We consider the collapse of a charged radiation fluid in a Planck-suppressed quadratic extension of General Relativity (GR) formulated à la Palatini. We obtain exact analytical solutions that extend the charged Vaidya-type solution of GR, which allows to explore in detail new physics at the Planck scale. Starting from Minkowski space, we find that the collapsing fluid generates wormholes supported by the electric field. We discuss the relevance of our findings in relation to the quantum foam structure of space–time and the meaning of curvature divergences in this theory.
