Models for the development of generic skills in Finnish higher education

This article examines how Finnish universities and other higher education institutes have responded to the challenges posed by rapid changes in the world of work and societies all over Europe, particularly with reference to the development of generic skills. The data were collected by means of individual and group interviews at three Finnish higher education institutes, including two universities and one university of applied sciences. The interviews involved 63 persons in charge of management, development and teaching at these institutes. Despite scant attention from historiography, Portugal played an important role as a way station on the road to exile for many Republicans during and after the Spanish Civil War. The situation in the neighbouring country was not easy for these people, as Antonio Oliveira de Salazar’s regime —officially allied with Franco’s Spain— did not recognize them as political refugees, but as illegal immigrants to be returned to Spain, which would have catastrophic consequences for many of them. Through the analysis of abundant primary sources in archives from Spain, Portugal, Mexico and the United States, we seek to understand the details of this Portuguese stage of the exile. Medial axis is known to be unstable for nonsmooth objects. For an open set O, we define the weak feature size, wfs, minimum distance between Oc and the critical points of the function distance to Oc. We introduce the "lambda-medial axis" Mλ of O, a subset of the medial axis of O which captures the homotopy type of O when λ < wfs. We show that, at least for some "regular" values of λ, Mλ remains stable under Hausdorff distance perturbations of Oc.

Assessment of the lymphoproliferative response to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) may help to identify human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1-infected patients at high risk of developing HCMV end-organ disease. The tritiated thymidine ([3H]-TdR)-incorporation assay is the gold standard for measuring lymphoproliferative responses, though it is unsuitable as a routine laboratory procedure. An alternative non-radioactive technique, a 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, was applied for measuring T-cell proliferation in response to HCMV.
