MOBIlity assessment with modern TEChnology in older patients’ real-life by the General Practitioner: the MOBITEC-GP study protocol
2019
Abstract Background Mobility limitations in older adults are associated with poor clinical outcomes including higher mortality and disability rates. A decline in mobility (including physical function and life-space) is detectable and should be discovered as early as possible, as it can still be stabilized or even reversed in early stages by targeted interventions. General practitioners (GPs) would be in the ideal position to monitor the mobility of their older patients. However, easy-to-use and valid instruments for GPs to conduct mobility assessment in the real-life practice setting are missing. Modern technologies such as the global positioning system (GPS) and inertial measurement units …
Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents’ growth and development
2023
Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being 1-6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a smal…
Sensors / Cross-country skiing analysis and ski technique detection by high-precision kinematic global navigation satellite system
2019
Cross-country skiing (XCS) embraces a broad variety of techniques applied like a gear system according to external conditions, slope topography, and skier-related factors. The continuous detection of applied skiing techniques and cycle characteristics by application of unobtrusive sensor technology can provide useful information to enhance the quality of training and competition. (1) Background: We evaluated the possibility of using a high-precision kinematic global navigation satellite system (GNSS) to detect cross-country skiing classical style technique. (2) Methods: A world-class male XC skier was analyzed during a classical style 5.3-km time trial recorded with a high-precision kinemat…
Prediction of leukocyte counts during paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia maintenance therapy
2019
Maintenance chemotherapy with oral 6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate remains a cornerstone of modern therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The dosage and intensity of therapy are based on surrogate markers such as peripheral blood leukocyte and neutrophil counts. Dosage based leukocyte count predictions could provide support for dosage decisions clinicians face trying to find and maintain an appropriate dosage for the individual patient. We present two Bayesian nonlinear state space models for predicting patient leukocyte counts during the maintenance therapy. The models simplify some aspects of previously proposed models but allow for some extra flexibility. Our second model is an ext…
Équivalents finnois du futur morphologique français : étude contrastive de dix nouvelles de Guy de Maupassant et de leurs traductions finnoises
2014
Tiivistelmä – Abstract Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka ranskan kielen morfologinen futuurirakenne esitetään suomenkielisissä käännösteksteissä. Ranskankielinen korpus käsittää noin 36 668 sanaa, suomenkielinen noin 25 …
Ajan arvoituksia : fiktiivinen ajan kokemus Cormac McCarthyn romaanissa No country for old men
2013
Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani inhimillisen ajan kokemuksen representaatioita Cormac McCarthyn romaanissa No Country for Old Men (2005). Tutkimuksessani selvitän, minkälaisen kuvan teoksen henkilöhahmojen kokemukset antavat ihmisen tavasta kokea aikaa. Lähtökohtanani on Paul Ricœurin ajatus, että fiktio kykenee luomaan ajan kokemuksen variaatioita, joiden avulla lukija voi rikastuttaa omaa ymmärrystään ajallisuudesta. Työn teoriaosuudessa esittelen erilaisia aikakäsityksiä monitieteisestä näkökulmasta. Tärkeimpänä rajanvetona on Ricœuriä seuraten eronteko objektiivisen kosmologisen ajan ja subjektiivisen fenomenologisen ajan välille. Lisäksi tarkastelen kaunokirjallisuuden kykyä ja k…
Cycling but not walking to work or study is associated with physical fitness, body composition and clustered cardiometabolic risk in young men
2020
IntroductionActive commuting is an inexpensive and accessible form of physical activity and may be beneficial to health. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of active commuting and its subcomponents, cycling and walking, with cardiometabolic risk factors, physical fitness and body composition in young men.MethodsParticipants were 776 Finnish young (26±7 years), healthy adult men. Active commuting was measured with self-report. Waist circumference was measured and body mass index (BMI) calculated. Aerobic fitness was measured with bicycle ergometer and muscular fitness with maximal leg and bench press, sit-ups, push-ups and standing long jump. Cardiometabolic risk factor…
“Like Ants in a Colony We Do Our Share”: Political Animals in Medieval Philosophy
2021
This chapter discusses the reception of the Aristotelian concept of ‘political animal’ in thirteenth and fourteenth century Latin philosophy. Aristotle thought that there are other political animals besides human beings, and his idea of what it means to be a political animal was partially based on biological needs and desires that lead animals to live together. By analysing what medieval philosophers thought of other political animals - such as ants, bees, and cranes - and of the biological basis of the political nature of humans, the chapter elaborates on the precise meaning of the concept of political animal. It is argued that biological aspects play a significant role in medieval views, …
Cognitive Dispositions in the Psychology of Peter John Olivi
2018
This chapter discusses Peter John Olivi’s (1248–1298) conception of the role of dispositions (habitus) in sensory cognition from metaphysical and psychological perspectives. It shows that Olivi makes a distinction between two general types of disposition. Some of them account for the ease, or difficulty, with which different persons use their cognitive powers, while others explain why people react differently to things that they perceive or think. This distinction is then applied to Olivi’s analysis of three different psychological operations, where the notion of disposition figures prominently; estimative perception, perceptual clarity, and the perception of pain and pleasure. The chapter …
Perceiving As : Non-conceptual Forms of Perception in Medieval Philosophy
2019
This chapter focuses on thirteenth-century Latin discussions concerning the psychological processes that explain some of the most sophisticated features of perceptual experience. Sense perception primarily conveys information about the sensible qualities of external objects; we see colours, hear sounds, taste flavours, and so forth. Yet, our experience of the external world contains several elements that cannot be reduced to these qualities. To name a few, external objects are perceived as three-dimensional bundles of properties, as useful or harmful for the perceiving subject, and as objects of desires, fears, and other emotions, and they are conceptualised in various ways—in short, they a…
