The study explores Finnish mothers' and educators' perceptions on young children's experiences and child-responsive practices related to flexibly-scheduled early childhood education and care (ECEC). Data were gathered by ethnography-based interviews with mothers and educators of oneto three-year-old children attending this form of ECEC and qualitatively analysed using the method of inductive content analysis. Luin äskettäin kiinnostavan työpaikkailmoituksen. Jyväskylän yliopiston tutkimuspalveluihin haettiin ”Tutkimusrahoituksen asiantuntijaa”. Pesti kuulosti kiinnostavalta, mutta näin aktiivitutkijalle sen vastaanottaminen olisi ollut sula mahdottomuus, kun hakuilmoituksen julkistamisesta työn aloittamishetkeen oli vain pari kuukautta. Ilmoitusta lukiessa tajusin yhtäkkiä, että olin kohdannut saman tilanteen aiemminkin. Useiden suomalaisten yliopistojen hallinnossa, tiedettä tukevissa tehtävissä, oli vuosien mittaan ollut avoinna useita mielenkiintoisia työpaikkoja, mutta koska ohjaan väitöskirjoja ja johdan hankkeita, en koskaan voinut hakea niitä pikaisen aikataulun takia.
